As a huge fan of the Game of Thrones world, I’m already getting excited for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to premiere! It’s got me thinking about where HBO is heading with the franchise. Apparently, they might even be considering bringing back a spinoff that was previously cancelled! Ever since the original series ended back in 2019 and split the fanbase, everyone’s been wondering what’s next for Westeros. We’ve already gotten House of the Dragon, and now A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but there have been a bunch of other ideas floating around. Some, like The Sea Snake and Aegon’s Conquest, are still in the works, while others – like Bloodmoon and that Jon Snow sequel – never really got off the ground.
According to sources at The Hollywood Reporter, the planned Jon Snow spin-off series is now being reevaluated. The details came out during an interview with author George R.R. Martin, revealing the original concept involved a very different Jon Snow – a defeated and disillusioned character who would have given up both his sword, Longclaw, and his direwolf, Ghost. (Seriously, Jon? Again with Ghost?!)
HBO started developing a sequel, but quickly realized the story was too bleak and decided to put it on hold. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the network is trying to revive the project with writer Quoc Dang Tran (known for Drops of God). This is unexpected, especially considering Kit Harington recently said he doesn’t want to return as his Game of Thrones character – but it’s good news if HBO can fix the story’s issues.
So, the folks at HBO are clearly brainstorming how to keep the Game of Thrones universe alive, and I’m hearing whispers about bringing Maisie Williams back as Arya Stark. Remember how she sailed west of Westeros at the end of the series? That opens up a huge world of possibilities, and it means they don’t have to get bogged down in the political mess of the Seven (or now Six!) Kingdoms. Pairing her with Jon Snow makes a lot of sense, giving them both a fresh start. But honestly, with these spinoff plans, it’s always a wait-and-see situation.
Would a Game of Thrones Sequel About Arya & Jon Snow Work?

As a huge fan of Game of Thrones, I’m relieved to hear HBO understands how tricky making a sequel could be. Since any show set after the original series wouldn’t have the books to fall back on, they know they’d really have to nail it. Someone at The Hollywood Reporter shared that HBO is definitely interested in a sequel, but they’re also very aware of how incredibly high the standards need to be – and honestly, they should be!
It’s good to hear about the potential Jon and Arya spinoff – it could be successful, but it would need careful planning, especially considering how the later seasons of Game of Thrones turned out. A story set in locations far from Westeros could be a smart approach, and seeing Jon and Arya reunite would be exciting – they didn’t share enough screen time in the original series. However, it’s hard to envision HBO continuing the story without revisiting Westeros or checking in on Bran and Sansa. Hopefully, if the network is committed to expanding the Game of Thrones universe, they can find a way to make it work.
