HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Trailer Smartly Avoids One of Game of Thrones’ Biggest Twists

HBO is continuing to invest in the world of *Game of Thrones*. *House of the Dragon* is proving popular with its second season, delivering plenty of dragon battles alongside political maneuvering. The upcoming third season will likely intensify the conflict between the opposing factions. With *House of the Dragon* already dominating the storyline, the next *Game of Thrones* spin-off, *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*, will focus on smaller-scale stories and avoid major events that could drastically alter the established world of Westeros.

The trailer for *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* shows the series is taking a straightforward approach. It follows Ser Duncan the Tall, a low-born knight trying to prove himself, and his young, spirited squire, Egg. While there’s clearly more to the story, the trailer smartly avoids revealing too much, choosing to keep the big surprises under wraps – unlike *Game of Thrones*.

The following contains spoilers for the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Could’ve Put All of Its Cards on the Table

The popularity of *Game of Thrones* has faded since its disappointing final season, which didn’t deliver satisfying endings for beloved characters. Because of this, HBO is looking for successes wherever it can find them, particularly by revisiting elements that fans enjoyed from the show’s prime. *House of the Dragon* does just that, frequently referencing the “Song of Ice and Fire” – the central story that motivated Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow in their battle against the Night King.

While not dealing with world-ending stakes like *Game of Thrones*, the series *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* has a significant link to the original show. It reveals that the character Egg is actually Aegon Targaryen, a prince who could have claimed the Iron Throne but chose to live a simple life. His experiences with Duncan shape him, and those lessons will be important later at the Red Keep. The show is smartly choosing to focus on the characters and their journey, rather than immediately revealing Egg’s royal identity to grab attention.

Game of Thrones Failed to Do Right By Its Secret Targaryen

It’s common for characters in *Game of Thrones* to have surprising family connections. The show consistently hinted that Jon Snow’s lineage was more complex than it appeared, and Bran Stark eventually reveals he’s actually Aegon Targaryen – the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. This revelation dramatically changes the political landscape and complicates Jon’s relationship with Daenerys. However, the show doesn’t fully explore the implications of Jon’s true identity; he ultimately relinquishes his claim to the throne and remains loyal to Daenerys until her downfall.

If the show *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* stays true to the books, Egg’s journey will be very different from those of Jon or Daenerys. He’ll face many difficult challenges designed to test him, but he’ll remain a good person and ultimately become a capable and selfless leader who genuinely cares about Westeros.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms airs on HBO in January 2026.
