I haven’t been this excited about the future of Game of Thrones in years, especially after hearing HBO’s plans for a new movie. Author George R.R. Martin recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and shared a lot of news, including updates on the highly anticipated novel, The Winds of Winter. He also revealed some details about the prequel series Aegon’s Conquest, which was announced in 2024 but hasn’t had many updates since.
A new report indicates that the planned series Aegon’s Conquest is still being considered, but now as a potential large-scale movie – similar in scope to Dune. While the Game of Thrones universe has delivered many impressive scenes, this story would be particularly well-suited for a cinematic experience. It’s arguably the perfect story within the franchise to move from television to film.
An ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ Movie Sounds Truly Epic

Chase Stone for The World of Ice and Fire
Ever since Game of Thrones finished in 2019, I’ve been up and down about the future of the series. It’s tough to follow up a story that was already so great – where do you even begin? House of the Dragon seemed promising, and I do enjoy it, but it doesn’t quite have the same captivating quality as the original Game of Thrones did a decade ago. The long waits between seasons and knowing how the story ends also take away some of the magic and epic feel that nothing has matched since the original series aired.
After watching the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, I agree with the positive feedback – it really captures the emotional core of the series. It’s smart to scale back after such a massive story. While the new series is well-crafted and has a lot of potential, I still long for the grand, romantic feel of the original Game of Thrones. That’s why I think telling the story of Aegon’s Conquest as a movie would be ideal.
A TV series about Aegon’s Conquest is an interesting idea, but it presents a challenge. Aegon Targaryen, who brought the Seven Kingdoms together, didn’t face many significant defeats. While he couldn’t conquer Dorne, that’s different from the struggles we saw in House of the Dragon. The thought of a powerful dragon and unstoppable armies is exciting, but it might not create enough compelling drama to sustain a full season of television.

However, as a movie, it’s a different situation, and the comparison to Dune is important. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films aren’t just visually impressive; they’re captivating because they focus on the human side of prophecies and the burdens of being a supposed savior. Even if this film centers on Aegon conquering Westeros, there’s a lot of potential for exploring relationships – between him and his sisters, the existing rulers, and the prophecy that drives his journey. This could deliver the kind of epic and emotionally resonant experience many fans hoped for from the final season of Game of Thrones.
