HBO’s Best Fantasy Show Since Game of Thrones Is This 84% RT Series With a Perfect Ending

Since the groundbreaking success of Game of Thrones, many TV networks have been striving to replicate its success by creating their own fantastical series. However, so far, few shows have managed to match its impact. This could be due to early cancellations, inferior quality, or simply because the evolving nature of television and the rise of streaming services have made it difficult for a single show to dominate popular culture as Game of Thrones once did.

The ending of “Game of Thrones” may have sparked debate, but there’s simply nothing else quite as unique and captivating. Even HBO has ventured to create new success within the same universe through spinoffs like “House of the Dragon” and the upcoming “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” While both shows have faced their fair share of criticisms, they are noteworthy. However, HBO’s best fantasy show since “Game of Thrones,” which is still a book adaptation, stands out as something different yet equally captivating: “His Dark Materials.” Adapted from Philip Pullman’s novels (which were previously brought to the big screen in the less-than-impressive movie “The Golden Compass”), it is widely regarded as one of the finest shows to emerge during television’s post-“Game of Thrones” fantasy boom.

Why His Dark Materials Is A Must-Watch Fantasy TV Show

The story starts out focusing on Lyra Belacqua (played by Dafne Keen), who is seeking her lost friend in Oxford, England. Though it shares many similarities with our world, this one also has unique aspects, like daemons – which are essentially the physical manifestation of a person’s soul as an animal companion. As the tale unfolds, there are further discoveries and fantastical elements introduced: witches, armored polar bears, and portals to other dimensions that Lyra navigates, becoming entwined in a grander narrative that ultimately raises questions about the essence of the universe and the destiny of humankind.

As a passionate fan of great storytelling, I must say that this series reminds me of the peak of “Game of Thrones” in its immersive world-building. The detail is so intricate, it feels like stepping into a tangible world that’s rich with history and character. It’s not as gritty or explicit as ‘Thrones’, but it certainly doesn’t lack depth. Instead, it delves into the Young Adult genre, exploring themes such as religion, free will, and the loss of innocence in thought-provoking ways. The series is filled with suspenseful sequences, jaw-dropping twists, and moments that will leave you emotionally drained. It’s a compelling watch that engages both your mind and heart.

The show didn’t quite match the budget scale of Game of Thrones during its most expensive seasons, and while there are occasional signs of this early on, it’s worth noting that if there’s a criticism, it’s that the daemons could have been more prevalent in Seasons 1 and 2. This resemblance is somewhat reminiscent of Game of Thrones’ questionable handling of direwolves later on. Nevertheless, the production quality remains impressive; there are several stunning visuals, and some of the CGI, especially the polar bears, is exceptional.

Moreover, noteworthy is the acting ensemble. Keen made a striking debut in “Logan,” but she showcases a wider emotional spectrum and more mature acting skills here, delivering her finest performance yet. Ruth Wilson exudes captivating charm; her character, who oscillates between sympathy and terror, displays the extremes of goodness and evil, reminiscent of Lena Headey’s outstanding portrayal as Cersei Lannister in “Game of Thrones.” And much like “Game of Thrones,” the remainder of the cast is predominantly British talent that you are likely familiar with.

In simpler terms, this show, “His Dark Materials,” which began in November 2019, offers a refreshing change post-“Game of Thrones.” It stands out as it has a satisfying ending, something that many viewers were missing after the controversial endings of certain characters in “Game of Thrones.” The show improves with each season and culminates in a conclusion that is nearly perfect for any fantasy TV series. Its excellent ending will be remembered fondly by fans.

His Dark Materials and Game of Thrones are both available to stream on HBO Max.
