After so much success, it felt like they just couldn’t stick the landing, and it really hurt the overall experience.

The biggest challenge for Game of Thrones was delivering a satisfying ending. After years of fan theories, and with the show having moved beyond the books it was based on, expectations were incredibly high.

Unfortunately, the final season of Game of Thrones wasn’t well-received. Many fans were unhappy with key choices, like the fate of Daenerys Targaryen and the unexpected crowning of Bran Stark as king. Viewers were even more critical, awarding the final season a dismal 30% audience score – making it the only season of the series to receive such a negative response.

The biggest problem with the final season of Game of Thrones is that it left many fans with a negative impression of the entire series. Before season 8, the show was a global phenomenon, but that’s changed in recent years. While Game of Thrones once set a new standard for fantasy television with its complex politics, realistic characters, and cinematic battles, the disappointing ending has unfortunately overshadowed its earlier achievements and altered how the public remembers the show.

How HBO Can Make Up For Game Of Thrones’ Disappointing Ending

Now, the focus should be on developing the sequel series that author George R.R. Martin has mentioned.

Martin recently mentioned at the Iceland Noir Festival that there are one or two more Game of Thrones sequels in the planning stages. While a Jon Snow sequel was previously considered but ultimately cancelled, there’s still a possibility it could be revived. Rumors also suggest a sequel focusing on Arya Stark might be developed. A new Game of Thrones series, especially one that addresses criticisms of the original ending and brings back fan-favorite characters, could revitalize the franchise years after its conclusion.
