When Warner Bros. Discovery announced a new Harry Potter TV series, many people immediately wondered why. The movies were already successful and well-received, so a reboot seemed unnecessary. However, the reason quickly became clear: the show aims to be much more faithful to the books. Unlike the films, the TV series promises a closer adaptation of the original story, and it appears they are committed to staying true to the source material.
HBO has finally released the first official image from the upcoming new Harry Potter series. While fans have seen many unofficial pictures and videos from the set, this official photo is a significant step up in quality. Even more exciting, the image hints at a scene that was never shown in the Harry Potter films, but which appears in the original books, offering a tease for what’s to come in the adaptation.
HBO’s Harry Potter Confirms Another Scene Not in the Films
The first image released from the upcoming Harry Potter series on HBO might not seem like much, but it hints at a significant change. Though the photo only shows actor Dominic McLaughlin from behind, eagle-eyed fans who’ve read the books will recognize the scene. A key part of Harry’s first year is being allowed to play Quidditch as a first-year student, leading to several matches in the book. While the first movie only included one Quidditch game, this photo confirms the series will show another match that was cut from the films – and this one is important to the story beyond just the sport itself.
The Quidditch match between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff in the first Harry Potter book takes place in the snowy, latter half of the school year. While the match is surprisingly brief – Harry catches the Snitch almost immediately – it’s significant because Severus Snape referees. More importantly, after the game, Harry follows Snape and discovers a secret meeting between him and Professor Quirrell in the Forbidden Forest. Harry overhears them discussing a way to bypass the three-headed dog guarding the Sorcerer’s Stone. This scene was cut from the films due to its brevity, but the new show appears to be including it.
Throughout much of the story, Harry strongly suspects Professor Snape of being involved in the dangerous events at Hogwarts, convinced he’s secretly behind everything. When Harry spies on Snape, it only reinforces this belief, leading him to think Snape is trying to steal the Philosopher’s Stone for himself. Harry and his friends continue to see Snape as the villain until they overcome the challenges protecting the Stone and discover the truth: Quirrell was the one working with Voldemort, and Snape had been trying to protect them all along.
The new Harry Potter TV series is proving to be very true to the books by including scenes that were left out of the original movies. This particular scene, which takes place in the Forbidden Forest and involves Harry trying to stop Quirrell, will become important later in the story. In the sixth book, The Half-Blood Prince, other Death Eaters use this event to question Snape’s loyalty to Voldemort. Although Snape manages to convince them he’s trustworthy, the fact that this scene is being included in the show suggests the series is building towards that moment. By the time viewers reach that point in the sixth book, they’ll have context and a clear memory of what happened, thanks to the footage already shown.
