The first trailer for HBO’s upcoming series is here, and the reboot is starting to feel like a real project. Fans finally get a glimpse of the new Hogwarts, including how characters like Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, Snape, and Hagrid will be portrayed. However, the actor playing Lord Voldemort hasn’t been revealed yet.
Ever since Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout were chosen to play Harry, Hermione, and Ron, fans online have been buzzing with casting predictions. Names like Cillian Murphy and Tilda Swinton have been suggested, and there’s even been talk of a Voldemort who isn’t traditionally male. But the mystery around who will play Voldemort might have a straightforward solution: perhaps multiple actors will take on the role.
Lord Voldemort’s Casting Hasn’t Been Announced for Good Reason
I was really intrigued by what Casey Bloys, the head of HBO Max, said at the UK launch on March 26th. He basically admitted that all the casting news floating around wasn’t true, simply because they hadn’t even started casting yet! He was pretty blunt about it, saying we shouldn’t believe anything we read, and he didn’t even know who they were considering! It definitely left me, and I’m sure a lot of other fans, wondering what’s actually going on with this reboot.
Even though details about the series have emerged – including the revelation of magic and Hogwarts – there’s been no word about Voldemort or the central quest to find the Philosopher’s Stone. While some believe HBO is keeping casting news secret to build anticipation, there’s a more practical reason: it could lead to a deeply developed and complex portrayal of Voldemort, making him one of the most nuanced wizards in the Harry Potter universe.
The show’s creators haven’t revealed who will play Voldemort yet, and for good reason – they might not cast just one actor. Throughout the seven books, Voldemort’s appearance changed dramatically. He appeared as a frail child, a horrifying presence within Professor Quirrell, a weakened spirit, a skeletal figure, and even as a normal-looking teenager in memories. Because of these many forms, they may need multiple actors to portray him.
His journey and background aren’t straightforward, but it seems like this might be smoothing out the ups and downs of Voldemort’s development into a more cohesive story.
HBO Is Making the Right Moves to Develop Lord Voldemort Into a Cohesive Character
When Voldemort was at his strongest, he murdered Lily and James Potter, but when he tried to kill their son, Harry, something unexpected happened: his soul was split apart. A piece of his soul fled to Albania, while others latched onto objects, like a diary and a locket, allowing him to continue existing in different forms. Though the films showed these separate pieces of Voldemort, they didn’t present them in a clear or connected way.
Young Voldemort was portrayed by three different actors – Christian Coulson, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and Frank Dillane – in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. This constant change in appearance was noticeably disruptive, likely because of different directors and creative approaches to the character.
Instead of being presented clearly, Tom Riddle’s story was told in scattered pieces throughout the eight movies, with no real connection between the scenes. This also created inconsistencies – the character appeared older in one movie than in another, which was confusing for viewers trying to follow his development.
HBO now has a unique opportunity to expand the story organically over multiple seasons. This could include adding extra scenes or rearranging events to happen in a more natural order, letting viewers witness the Dark Lord’s development over time. We’ll see more depth and backstory about the person who became the most evil wizard, giving a richer understanding of his journey.
As a huge cinema fan, I think showing Tom Riddle’s complete journey into Voldemort will need a lot of different actors. We need to see that transformation over the years, in all its magical forms. While we haven’t heard who’ll play Voldemort yet, it feels like this version will be much more carefully considered. Honestly, a TV show seems like the perfect place to really explore that change in depth – something the movies just couldn’t do.
As a fan, I’ve been wondering about Voldemort’s appearance in Season 1, and it sounds like we might not see the fully-formed, adult Voldemort right away. There’s a possibility they’ll use a different actor – maybe even Luke Thallon, who plays Quirrell – to show Voldemort when he’s at his weakest. This makes sense, actually, because we haven’t gotten a big announcement about who’s playing him yet, even after the first trailer dropped!
Unlike previous depictions that only showed glimpses of Voldemort’s past, HBO has the resources to fully develop his life story. Casting different actors to portray him at various ages is a smart approach, as long as it’s handled with care and nuance.
