HBO’s Harry Potter Remake Gets an Updated Release Window (& Fans Will Be Pleased)

As a huge fan of the Harry Potter books, I’m so excited about the new HBO Max series! It’s basically a fresh start for the story, aimed at a new generation of viewers. What really gets me thrilled is that they’re planning to adapt each book over an entire season, which is fantastic! The movies always felt a little rushed trying to fit everything into just a couple of hours. We knew it was coming sometime in 2027, but now an HBO executive has finally let slip when we can expect the first season to actually air – and honestly, I couldn’t be happier!

HBO’s Casey Bloys told Deadline that the new Harry Potter series is still on track for a 2027 release, and they’re currently aiming for early in the year. He wasn’t able to give a more specific date, like a particular month, but confirmed the target is still early 2027.

What We Know About HBO Max’s Harry Potter Series

Details about the new HBO Max Harry Potter series have been revealed gradually, which is a good strategy considering the show isn’t scheduled to premiere for over a year. Initially, it was announced there would be one season for each book, but HBO has since indicated the series will span ten years, suggesting they’ll cover the increasingly lengthy later books in more detail—similar to how the final book required two movies to adapt its full story.

Exciting news for the upcoming Harry Potter series: the main trio has been cast! Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will be Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will take on the role of Ron Weasley. Several other actors have also joined the cast, including John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.

Francesca Garduber, known for her work on shows like His Dark Materials and The Man in the High Castle, is leading the series as showrunner. Director Mark Mylod is also on board. Filming for the first season began in May 2025 and has been underway for eight months, suggesting that work on Season 2 will begin well before the first season of the new Harry Potter series arrives on HBO Max.
