The world clearly loves Harry Potter, and its popularity continues with each new generation. Over the years, the books have become movies, a spin-off series, a theme park, a play, video games, and now a TV reboot. This raises questions: why revisit a story everyone already knows, is now the right time, and will this new series be worthwhile? Who is it even for? However, the core issue with the original saga, something many fans felt but rarely discussed, is that its structure always felt limited by its central character. The new TV series seems poised to address this and expand the world beyond Harry’s immediate story.
The story of Harry Potter is compelling, but the Wizarding World itself is what many fans are most eager to explore. This is why games and fanfiction are so popular – they allow us to see the world through different eyes and experience its intricacies firsthand. Focusing solely on Harry’s perspective keeps us at a distance from fully understanding the universe. While there’s plenty of information about the Wizarding World available, actually experiencing it is something else entirely.
Harry Potter TV Series Will Offer a More Complete Look at the Wizarding World

When the new HBO series was announced, people immediately started guessing what it would be like. As details emerged, it became clear this isn’t just a retelling of the original story, or even a longer version – it’s intentionally adding to it. Imagine seeing more of the characters’ everyday lives, like what their families are like, or what happens when they’re not at school. While the original story is great, it feels like the perfect time to add depth and context instead of simply repeating what we already know. The team behind the reboot seems to realize they don’t need to stick exactly to the source material to make something new and exciting.
A prime example of this expanded storytelling is the deeper look into Draco Malfoy’s life, including scenes at Malfoy Manor and explorations of his family that weren’t fully shown in the books. Actor Lox Pratt, who plays Draco, discussed this in an interview with Magazine 1883. He explained that this adaptation offers viewers much more than the books did. “The books, and the original films, largely focused on Harry’s perspective, which is fantastic,” Pratt said, “but this version shows so much more – like what the teachers are up to behind the scenes, and Draco’s life at home. There are some really compelling scenes at his home that offer insight into his character, but I don’t want to give too much away!”
Fans have long felt that Draco Malfoy, while important, lacked depth as a character – he often felt like a plot device rather than a fully realized person. By delving into his backstory and motivations, the show makes his conflicts much more compelling. This isn’t about making him sympathetic, but about giving him the opportunity to develop beyond his initial role. Characters like Draco – teachers, allies, and even villains – have always had the potential for richer storylines, but the show hadn’t previously allowed space for those narratives to unfold.
Why Expanding the Wizarding World Is Exactly the Right Move for the Show

The original books focused almost entirely on Harry, treating everything else as secondary detail. Expanding beyond that focus – showing what life is like for other characters and the world when Harry isn’t involved – significantly enriches the story. It makes the world feel more real and allows viewers to connect with it on a deeper level. Seeing how characters live their lives outside of the main plot gives their choices more impact and makes them more understandable. This is an area where television excels compared to movies, and it’s something the books didn’t really emphasize.
This also explains why the Wizarding World has had trouble building a successful, long-term franchise. It wasn’t a lack of new ideas, but rather a weak foundation. After the main Harry Potter story finished in theaters, the franchise attempted to grow with projects focusing on different characters, like the Fantastic Beasts series. The intention was to create a larger universe, similar to Star Wars. However, Harry Potter was always told from a very specific perspective, and we never really learned how the wider wizarding world functioned – things like how the Ministry of Magic operates, how other wizarding families live, or what life is like outside of Harry’s immediate circle. As a result, when new stories try to explore these areas, they feel emotionally and structurally disconnected.
The Fantastic Beasts films began with a promising idea, but they strayed from their initial focus, becoming overly complicated with political storylines and failing to truly resonate with audiences. The new films introduced a different time period, different characters, and a different story, making it hard for viewers to connect. Fans are eager to revisit the original Harry Potter world, but they want to see more of the characters they already care about and understand their perspectives. Ultimately, while the magical universe exists, it hasn’t been expanded enough to support completely separate stories that feel as important as the original series.

Just because the source material is being expanded doesn’t guarantee everything will fit seamlessly into the show. It’s easy to lose the story’s focus or get bogged down in unnecessary details if you add too much. Finding the right balance between adding meaningful depth and overwhelming the audience is crucial. However, early indications suggest the goal isn’t to simply add filler, but to flesh out previously unexplored areas of the story.
HBO isn’t simply revisiting familiar ground with its series; it’s fundamentally changing how the story is told in a way fans have long hoped for. By sharing the focus among multiple characters instead of relying on a single perspective, the show has the potential to create a richer, more expansive Wizarding World than the books ever did. Given the history of the Harry Potter franchise, this isn’t just a positive change—it’s essential for the story’s future.
Harry Potter TV series arrives on HBO in 2027.
