HBO’s Harry Potter TV Show Will Solve a Mystery After 30 Years (& It May Confirm a Fan Theory)

As a huge Harry Potter fan, I’m so excited about the HBO series! It’s amazing to hear they’re not just retelling the story we know, but actually building on it and finally answering some of those lingering questions we’ve all had for years. The longer format of the show will really let them dive deeper, especially in the first few seasons where there’s less book material to work with – they can really fill things out and add some wonderful details. We’re already getting glimpses of this, like the confirmation that Nicolas and Perennelle Flamel will be included, and hearing about a scene at Malfoy Manor? It’s already sounding incredible!

HBO is giving fans a sneak peek behind the scenes of the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, inviting social media influencers to visit the set. Along with that access comes new information, including a surprising detail: the show will finally explain why Ron Weasley always has dirt on his nose. This is a running joke pointed out by Hermione Granger in the first book, The Philosopher’s Stone, during the train ride to Hogwarts, and according to an Instagram post by @janariva, the series will address it.

Harry Potter’s TV Show Explaining This Ron Weasley Mystery Actually Makes Sense

The new Harry Potter TV series is promising to address fan questions, even the seemingly small ones – like why Ron often has dirt on his nose. While it sounds funny, there could be a logical reason. The most popular theory suggests the dirt is soot from the Weasley family using floo powder – a magical method of travel involving fireplaces – to get to King’s Cross. This would explain the soot marks and make sense within the show’s world.

It’s probably not a deliberate focus on this particular detail, but more likely part of a longer introduction to the main characters before they even get to Hogwarts. We already know we’ll see Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger at home before starting school, and it would make sense to also see Ron Weasley at The Burrow – all as part of the same introductory sequence leading up to the scenes at Platform 9 3/4 and on the Hogwarts Express.

I totally get why the TV show is going in a different direction. It needs to expand on the story, you know? If it just copied the books and movies, there’d be no reason to watch it! Plus, it’s a great opportunity to explore the characters in ways we haven’t seen before – giving us new perspectives without completely changing who they are.

This change feels natural and will likely make the first few episodes more engaging for both longtime fans and newcomers. It also improves the show’s pacing, letting us introduce other important characters and storylines sooner, instead of solely focusing on Harry’s perspective. That approach could have stretched things thin over the longer first episodes before reaching the wizarding school.

HBO has finally given fans a first glimpse of Harry Potter in the upcoming series, showing actor Dominic McLaughlin in his Quidditch uniform as he prepares for the Gryffindor versus Hufflepuff match – a scene that didn’t make it into the films. They’ve also hinted at more reveals soon, likely in the form of a teaser trailer, meaning we’ll be finding out much more about the show shortly.

The Harry Potter TV show is expected to debut on HBO and HBO Max sometime in 2027.
