I just started watching the new HBO comedy, Rooster, and I’m really excited because a lot of the people who worked on Ted Lasso are involved! It’s off to a good start, too – it’s already getting positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
Premiering March 8th on HBO and HBO Max, the ten-episode series Rooster, created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, follows a successful author played by Steve Carell, an Academy Award nominee. The show explores his complex relationship with his daughter, all set within the quirky environment of university life. With a talented supporting cast, this dramedy is already generating positive buzz.
Before it starts streaming on HBO, the movie Rooster has an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 14 reviews. This score is likely to change as more reviews come in, but currently, only two reviews are negative.
I was immediately drawn into this charming story! It centers around Steve Carell, who plays a successful novelist taking a job at a quaint college in New England. What I especially loved is that the story also brings him back into the life of his daughter, played by Charly Clive – she’s an art history professor with plenty going on herself, it seems! It’s nice to see a story where family relationships are so central, and that everyone has their own struggles.
The show features a talented cast including Danielle Deadwyler, who starred in Till, John C. McGinley from Scrubs, Lauren Tsai known for Legion, and Phil Dunster of Ted Lasso. Recurring guest stars include Annie Mumolo, a writer and actress from Bridesmaids, Connie Britton of Friday Night Lights, comedian Robby Hoffman from Hacks, and Scott MacArthur from The Righteous Gemstones.
This project is a reunion of sorts for Rooster creator Bill Lawrence, who previously worked with Brett Goldstein (who played Jamie Tartt on Ted Lasso). Meanwhile, Donald Faison is famous for his role as Dr. Cox in the comedy Scrubs. However, Faison’s well-known past work sometimes leads to comparisons with Lawrence’s previous shows when Rooster is reviewed.
Many critics are optimistic about the new HBO series, seeing it as another strong project from creator Bill Lawrence, who also brought us Apple TV+’s Bad Monkey and Shrinking. In a review for ScreenRant, Grant Hermanns highlighted the show’s familiar and comforting atmosphere, noting that the first six episodes had a similar feel to Lawrence’s previous work.
Okay, so Hermanns points out this new show isn’t quite up to the standard of Lawrence’s best stuff, or what he usually does with Tarses. But honestly, with this cast and crew? I’m not worried at all about Rooster. It’s set in college, and I think it could really hit its stride as the season goes on, becoming genuinely funny and smart. I can totally see it becoming one of those shows that really makes Steve Carell’s work shine.
Rooster premieres Sunday, March 8 at 10 PM ET on HBO
