A sequel to Michael Mann’s classic 1995 crime film, Heat, is officially happening. The project, known as Heat 2, has been in development since 2022 and has now moved forward with a key development.
In a recent interview with HeyUGuys, famed producer Jerry Bruckheimer discussed several exciting upcoming movies. He talked about the Apple Original film F1, as well as other projects in development. Bruckheimer, who is producing the sequel to Heat, confirmed that Heat 2 will begin filming in August 2026.
Just after 6:30, Bruckheimer announced that a sequel is now being developed. He added that he’s hoping to begin filming in August.
Leonardo DiCaprio came up during the interview, and it’s been rumored he’ll star in the film. He recently confirmed the movie is based on Michael Mann’s novel, Heat 2, which will expand on the story of the original 1995 film by exploring both its past and future. He explained that because the book is already published, he wasn’t revealing any secrets, and described the story as taking place both before and after what he considers a landmark crime film.
Bruckheimer said DiCaprio was essential to the film, but quickly added that director Michael Mann was equally important.
So, the reason we got a sequel? It all started with Michael writing a new book – the one that came out in 2022. Honestly, it’s fantastic! The producer was really hyping it up, and then he started singing Mann’s praises, which is always good to hear.
Bruckheimer explained the movie’s script is adapted from an amazing book, calling it a thrilling experience and praising its overall quality.
Jerry Bruckheimer wasn’t involved in the original 1995 film, but he joined the project after collaborating with director Michael Mann on Mann’s first film, 1981’s Thief. Mann contacted him when he started trying to develop a sequel.
