Heated Rivalry author reveals hit TV series’ success has helped source Parkinson’s treatment

The author of the popular book ‘Heated Rivalry‘ recently shared that the show’s success has allowed her to access specialized medical care for Parkinson’s disease.

Since its debut in November 2025, the Canadian series Heated Rivalry – a story about a romantic relationship between two ice hockey players – has quickly become a fan favorite.

The series has become incredibly popular, to the point that the author of the original books can now afford specialized medical care.

Rachel Reid, the author of a novel series that began in 2018, received a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 2023, shortly before discussions began about adapting her work into the ‘Heated Rivalry’ series.

The author recently told Variety that a Parkinson’s disease specialist reached out to her after the series’ creator and director, Jacob Tierney, discussed her diagnosis in a television interview.

She shared that she’d been trying to connect with a Parkinson’s specialist for years, but living in a small town meant a long wait – five years, to be exact. Thankfully, Tierney helped her find a neurologist who specializes in Parkinson’s, and she has an appointment scheduled in a couple of weeks.

This could really help me, because I haven’t been receiving the care I need. He also explained how to adjust my medication to help me sleep, as I’ve been struggling with insomnia.

“That change made me sleep through the night, which really helps with writing.”

During the interview, Reid also talked about how Parkinson’s disease has made writing difficult. She explained that she struggles with tasks like using a computer mouse and typing for extended periods, and finds it hard to sit comfortably for long. Despite these challenges, she’s exploring different methods to continue writing.
