Rachel Reid is making progress on and off the ice.
The author of the popular “Game Changers” book series, which inspired the HBO Max show “Heated Rivalry,” is enjoying the show’s success. She’s also thankful for how working on the adaptation has helped her cope with a Parkinson’s diagnosis she received last year.
In a recent interview with Variety published on December 30th, Rachel shared that show creator Jacob Tierney discussed her Parkinson’s diagnosis during a CNN appearance a few weeks prior. She noted that the interviewer unexpectedly brought up the topic.
The 45-year-old said he initially found the situation a little strange, but the next day, a leading Parkinson’s specialist contacted him offering assistance.
Because Rachel had never spoken with a Parkinson’s specialist before, she was particularly surprised to be contacted.
She explained that it took five years to get an appointment because she lives in a rural area. Thankfully, they’ve now connected her with a Parkinson’s specialist and a neurologist, and she has an appointment scheduled in about two weeks.
The assistance arrived just when she needed it, as the romance novelist shared that Parkinson’s disease is making it harder for her to write.

Rachel explained that a physical issue is making it difficult for her to write, as she struggles to use a mouse and can’t sit or type for extended periods.
She’s looking for a more efficient writing process. She’s considering voice-to-text, but isn’t sure if it would work for her since it doesn’t feel natural. She needs to find a solution because writing has become much slower lately.
Rachel is hopeful that her recent medical knowledge will help her get better care, as she feels she isn’t currently receiving the treatment she needs.
She explained that he advised her on adjusting her medication to help with insomnia, as she hadn’t been able to sleep. This adjustment allowed her to sleep soundly through the night, which significantly improved her writing process.
