Jacob Tierney is adding a little fire to this vintage friendship.
The creator of Heated Rivalry is joining forces with Jason Bateman for a new Netflix drama called Alexander. The series will focus on the relationship between Alexander the Great and his teacher, the philosopher Aristotle.
The team working on the show is already very close. Jacob is writing the script, and his former competitor, Brendan Brady, will be an executive producer. Brendan will share producing responsibilities with Jason and Michael Costigan, his partner at Aggregate Films. They’ve previously collaborated on Netflix hits like Ozark and Black Rabbit.
The new streaming series, Alexander, is adapted from Annabel Lyon’s 2009 novel, The Golden Mean. The story centers on the surprising friendship between Alexander the Great, the former king of Macedonia, and his tutor, Aristotle, set against a backdrop of palace secrets, passionate relationships, violent conflict, and fierce power struggles.
Their relationship fundamentally changes the course of history, and Jacob said he’s thrilled to portray such a significant turning point in a movie.
The 46-year-old shared with Netflix that she’s been captivated by Annabel Lyon’s book for years and has wanted to adapt it into a story ever since. She and Brendan are thrilled to be working with Aggregate and Netflix to bring this fascinating world to the screen.
Jinny Howe, the head of U.S. and Canada scripted series at Netflix, echoed the sentiment.
We’re incredibly excited to be collaborating with Jacob Tierney, a truly innovative and sought-after creator, on Alexander,” she said. “The series offers a fresh take on the classic mentor-protégé dynamic, delivering a story that feels both grand in scale and deeply personal.

Although Alexander is Jacob and Brendan’s first project with Netflix, they’re already working on the next season of Heated Rivalry for HBO Max. Following the success of the first season – where fans adored the developing romance between hockey players Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) – the show’s creators recently shared a brief update on when fans can expect season two.
Jacob announced on CBS Mornings last month that filming will begin in August. He explained they are currently writing the script and preparing for production, promising fans more of “Heated Rivalry” will be coming to television as quickly as they can manage.
When can we expect to see Shane and Ilya skating again? According to a Crave spokesperson (Crave partnered with the show’s creators), they’re planning a premiere in spring 2027, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.
While Jacob keeps developing his creative touch on upcoming projects, here’s a look at more TV shows that have been renewed for another season…

I’m going to miss seeing her every day, but I’m happy she’s prioritizing what matters most.
