I’m really getting into Heated Rivalry! Episode 3 introduced Scott and Kipp, and I have a feeling they’re going to be important later on. The show, which is based on Rachel Reid’s book, centers around the captivating connection between Shane Hollander, played by Hudson Williams, and Connor Storrie as Ilya Rozanov. They’re both incredibly talented hockey players in this fictional league, the MLH, and their dynamic is just fascinating to watch. It’s really the heart of the story for me.
Originally a Canadian show on Crave, Heated Rivalry became widely popular when HBO Max began streaming it in the United States. The series offers a mix of appealing elements, including a romance inspired by BookTok, exciting hockey action, and LGBTQ+ representation, making it enjoyable for a broad audience. However, despite its success and dedicated fanbase, episode 3 of Heated Rivalry featured very little of the characters Shane and Ilya.
Scott & Kip Are The Main Characters Of Game Changer
Instead of focusing on the emotional cliffhanger from the previous episode—where Shane almost sends a sad text to Ilya about their lack of a kiss—the new episode, “Heated Rivalry,” starts by showing an earlier scene in a new light. We flashback to the 2014 Olympics, where Carter praises the courage of openly gay athletes competing in Russia despite facing potential danger.
While the conversation starts as a way for Shane to see how Ilya is doing, the latest episode of Heated Rivalry focuses the story on Scott Hunter (François Arnaud). Scott, who was previously a minor character, takes center stage in this episode as he begins a romance with smoothie shop worker Christopher “Kip” Grady (Robbie G.K.).
Scott and Kip first meet when Scott goes to Straw+Berry for a smoothie, and they share a playful connection. Scott starts going there regularly just to see Kip, and they eventually reconnect at a gala. After a brief encounter, they begin a secret relationship, but Kip eventually finds it too stressful to hide and decides they need to address it.
The quick change in the story might have been surprising for some viewers, but those familiar with the books expected it, as the romance between Scott and Kip started the Game Changers series. The books actually introduced Scott and Kip before Shane and Ilya – they were the first couple featured. However, the love story in Heated Rivalry doesn’t perfectly match the original book version.
How Heated Rivalry Changed Scott & Kip’s Storyline
As expected, Scott and Kip’s episode closely followed the story in Game Changer. We learn in episode 3 that Kip loves history and once hoped to go to college. He’s from Brooklyn and has a close group of friends, including his coworker Maria (Bianca Nugara), best friend Elena (Nadine Bhabha), and the people he works with at Kingfisher, a gay bar in the neighborhood.
However, the book Heated Rivalry did have some key differences from the original story. The biggest change was the timeline. The story moved very quickly, all happening during the 2017 MLH season. In fact, Scott and Kip’s entire romance initially unfolded over just six months.
In the TV series, Scott and Kip meet much earlier – during the 2014 hockey season. While Shane and Ilya met even before that, giving Scott and Kip’s quick romance more development – including challenges and a long separation – will make their eventual reunion even more impactful.
In addition to fitting into the overall story arc, Heated Rivalry made some key changes to the original narrative. Scott’s past is now more tragic: instead of losing just his mother as a teen, both of his parents are killed by a drunk driver. Also, both Scott and Kip are now older characters, which helps to differentiate them from the younger couple, Shane and Ilya.
Why Heated Rivalry’s Bottle Episode Was Necessary

While the passionate relationship between Shane and Ilya in Heated Rivalry captured attention, the series offers much more than just their romance. The characters Scott and Kip play a key role in Shane and Ilya’s relationship during the 2017 playoffs, so Heated Rivalry had to develop another romantic storyline beforehand to ensure the impact of that future scene wasn’t lost.
The show Heated Rivalry made a good choice by focusing most of Scott and Kip’s story in one episode. While they could have shown Scott and Kip’s relationship alongside Shane and Ilya’s, that would have weakened both storylines. By keeping Scott and Kip’s scenes mostly within episode 3, the show can smoothly return to the main romance without feeling rushed or disjointed later on.
I was so impressed with how thoughtfully the show handled all its relationships! It’s rare to see a series like Heated Rivalry dedicate so much time to multiple queer couples and give them such full, interesting stories. While Shane and Ilya definitely grabbed my attention, their story felt connected to everything else happening, and they weren’t the only LGBTQ+ characters getting their due. Honestly, seeing Scott grapple with his sexuality just made the whole story even better and more complex.
The latest episode of Heated Rivalry, episode 3, has gotten fans even more eager to see what happens with Shane and Ilya. Although Shane and Ilya weren’t featured much in this episode, their limited appearance only increased anticipation for their return next time. While Scott and Kip’s storyline was important, Shane and Ilya are truly the central focus of Heated Rivalry.
