Hellboy Creator Calls The Crooked Man Most Faithful Comic Adaptation

As a longtime fan of the Hellboy comics, I have eagerly awaited each new adaptation of Mike Mignola’s iconic character. From Ron Perlman’s beloved portrayal to David Harbour’s more recent take, I must admit that my expectations for the latest iteration, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, are high. Given my personal connection to the source material and the early praise from Mignola himself, I am optimistic that this film will be a faithful and satisfying adaptation.

1. “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” is the third attempt by a movie studio to bring the beloved independent comics character to life on screen, following Ron Perlman’s portrayal which fans appreciated, but David Harbour’s 2019 version was met with criticism from both critics and audiences. The upcoming film is set to be released in theaters, and although reviews have not been published yet, creator Mike Mignola has expressed his enthusiasm for it, stating that it is the most accurate adaptation of the character thus far.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Mignola shared with Screen Rant his excitement over how accurately the film adaptation captured the source material. He expressed concern that favorite elements might be lost in translation but was thrilled to discover that key scenes from the comics were included. Watching dailies, he held his breath in anticipation, amazed by what he saw and worried it would be edited out later.

In the comic, Hellboy travels to the Appalachian region to look into reports of supernatural occurrences, including haunted places, witches, and the mysterious figure known as the Crooked Man, who is believed to be a demon.

Mignola shared, “I cherished a special moment in the church. I wondered, ‘Will they enhance that scene?’ It was so tranquil and delicate, yet it stood out throughout the entire production. Though I enjoyed other films and appreciated various aspects from them, this instance was… I felt incredibly thankful to see someone who truly intended to incorporate [it], as not everyone follows through with their promise, ‘We’ll adapt your comic for the screen,’ but this time, it actually happened.”

In the film “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” Jack Kesy takes on the lead character. Joining him are Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, Joseph Marcell, Leah McNamara, Hannah Margetson, and Martin Bassindale. This production is brought to life by Millennium Films, with distribution handled by Ketchup Entertainment. Bryan Taylor, Mignola, and Christopher Golden collaborated on the screenplay.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is set for release later this year.
