Hell’s Divers 2 continues to thrive with no signs of deceleration. Recently, the game made its debut on Xbox, and it’s also experiencing an impressive resurgence, thanks to a collaboration with Halo.
Xbox is currently featuring it on their Twitter feed (previously known as X), whereas Gears of War is the focus on PlayStation’s highlight.
In the current wave of progress, Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani has subtly suggested that local multiplayer (couch co-op) could be a future option. He clarified that the technical aspects allow for split-screen, but implementing it might not be as straightforward. Furthermore, while an 8-player mode seems feasible, Jorjani cautioned that it could potentially lead to chaos.
Helldivers 2’s surge continues after Xbox release
Due to its launch on Xbox Series X|S on August 26, 2025, Helldivers 2 experienced a significant increase in gamers. The number of players skyrocketed, reaching over 500,000 according to in-game data, and an Arrowhead studio representative confirmed that the game peaked above this figure – a player count not seen since its initial release in 2024.
While I’d be inclined to label this the “Halo effect” given the crossover Warbond, it seems more likely tied to the Xbox debut and renewed PC interest. The demand has been so immense that servers have had trouble keeping pace, leading to temporary issues as players flocked in to promote democracy.
It’s heartening to notice that the community has come together in support of the influx of new Xbox gamers. Many long-time players have generously offered assistance to newcomers, demonstrating the tight-knit nature of gaming communities on platforms like Twitter (now X), Reddit, and Facebook. Despite a few disgruntled fans trying to organize others into excluding or attacking Xbox players – as a response to Sony releasing titles on Xbox – their efforts were unsuccessful in creating a hostile environment.
CEO says split-screen is “technically feasible” and 8 players is also “technically possible”

As an analyst reporting on the latest gaming news, I recently came across information shared by both Gamerant and Inside Gaming regarding Helldivers 2. During a conversation in the official Helldivers 2 Discord channel, Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani was questioned about the possibility of implementing split-screen gameplay. In response, he acknowledged that technically it could be achieved but expressed uncertainty as to whether it is a feature players are genuinely interested in. He further mentioned that this potential addition has been added to their list for investigation.
It’s possible from a technical standpoint, yet uncertain whether it meets users’ needs. We’re planning to explore its potential further.
Shams Jorjani
As a person who spent my formative years playing cooperative games such as Halo on a single screen, I’d be delighted to see that feature implemented in Helldivers 2. It doesn’t even matter if the system requires an unseen connection to keep players from drifting too far apart; split-screen gameplay would undoubtedly enhance the experience.
In a previous response on Discord, Jorjani noted that managing a team of eight players can be quite technically demanding, yet exciting and chaotic. This comment suggests that Arrowhead could potentially be exploring such features. With four-player co-op already causing quite a bit of chaos, an eight-player mode might amplify the madness even more.
8 players is technically very challenging, but it would be cool and messy.
Shams Jorjani
In addition to current features, it would be fantastic if the game included a fully immersive first-person perspective mode. This desire stems from the thrill of wielding my MA5C Assault Rifle in a first-person perspective, and the idea of engaging in battle with this iconic Halo weapon in true first-person combat style would significantly enhance the gaming experience for me in Helldivers 2.
Community requests vs developer priorities

Although the prospect of features such as split-screen play for eight players and additional cave exploration sounds enticing in theory, Arrowhead Studio is currently focused on regular updates. The next update is due on September 2, 2025, enriching the game with caves and fresh content. Given that Jorjani considers these ideas technically achievable but also demanding, it prompts a question about whether the development time could be more effectively used elsewhere.
As an analyst, I’m curious about the community’s preferences regarding our upcoming game, Helldivers 2 on Xbox. Would it be split-screen multiplayer mayhem for eight players, or perhaps a unique alternative? Personally, I can’t help but express my hope for a first-person mode. For now, I’ll continue to eagerly anticipate and enthusiastically participate in the game with my squid, doing my part to spread democracy far and wide!
