Henry Cavill, the actor known for playing Superman in Man of Steel, is a big fan of the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop game and was set to star in and help produce a TV series based on it. Amazon’s Prime Video approved the Warhammer 40K series in 2023, but production has recently hit a snag.
IGN reports that Amazon has complete control over how the adaptation will be delivered. Games Workshop has cautioned fans not to expect a Warhammer television show anytime soon, suggesting it’s still a long way off.
It’s been over three years since Amazon and Games Workshop announced they were making a Warhammer series, and there haven’t been many updates since. Games Workshop’s CEO, Kevin Roundtree, recently stated that they’re still developing the show and are aiming to bring Warhammer to screens in a completely new way.
We’re still working on the live-action project with our partners at Amazon MGM Studios, Henry Cavill, and Vertigo. These kinds of projects naturally take a few years to develop. Unlike our main business, we can’t guarantee a release date because delivery ultimately depends on our partners and how they manage their own schedules.
The project has been difficult to discuss publicly, but in a recent interview, the creator described it as a challenging yet rewarding IP. He explained that he loves the complexity of the source material and is thoroughly enjoying the challenge of adapting it in a way that does it justice.
Warhammer 40,000 is a well-known miniature wargame originally developed by Games Workshop and Rick Priestley in the United Kingdom. The first version came out in 1987, and the latest edition was released in 2023. Henry Cavill, along with Vertigo Entertainment and Natalie Viscuso, successfully secured the rights to adapt the game into other media.
The History of the Warhammer Universe
In 2022, the creators presented their vision for a Warhammer film and TV universe to Amazon. The studio quickly secured the rights, and the first project will be a television series based on the game.
We’ve been hard at work exploring the vast and amazing universe of Warhammer, collaborating with the talented team at Games Workshop. We’ve been brainstorming ideas, studying the rich history, and diving into the many compelling characters and stories within it.
We’ve made great progress in planning the setting for our new universe, thanks to the collaboration between Amazon and Games Workshop. While we’re not ready to reveal the location just yet, stay tuned for more details soon!
The Warhammer 40K series does not yet have a premiere date.
