As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Robert Glenister is joining the ensemble of BBC sitcom Here We Go for its third season! The delightful Katherine Parkinson, one of the series’ stars, has hinted at Glenister’s character being a bit of a “feckless” individual. Intriguingly, she suggests this role could have significant implications within the Jessop family narrative – I can hardly wait to see how it all unfolds!
In the forthcoming episode, I’m excited to join the Jessops as they embark on a vacation to the beautiful island of Malta. This trip also serves as a heartwarming reunion for Rachel (Parkinson) and Robin (Tom Basden), as they seek to reconcile with their father, Michael (Glenister), who they’ve been apart from for some time.
In my perspective, it seems Rachel and Robin aren’t enjoying the best of relationships with their dad. However, I find myself believing that Rachel could work towards mending this gap, having completed her training in family counseling.
According to Parkinson, her character desires more from him. All her narratives revolve around him disappointing Robin during winter, being late for picking him up from football practice, and failing to show up, among other instances.
“Really, he was just kind of absent, so I think her problems with him aren’t unfounded.”
Parkinson hinted that the strained bond might improve appropriately, yet he commended Basden for his writing style that never veers into sentimentality and instead avoids simplistic or overused resolutions to intricate family predicaments.
She clarified, “There isn’t that specific moment when he says ‘I love you deeply,’ and so on. Instead, it feels more genuine to me, and I believe it makes the sentiment even more touching because of it.

In a recent statement, the award-nominated actor, who received his nomination this year for the film Rivals, expressed his approval of Glenister’s casting as the character Michael, describing him as both “slightly dangerous” and “very feckless.” Furthermore, the actor stated that he wholeheartedly believed in Glenister’s portrayal of Rachel’s father.
Apart from delving deeper into Rachel and Robin’s past, the Malta episode of Here We Go serves the purpose of fulfilling Basden’s long-held desire to film a genuine overseas vacation for the series. This was achieved by taking the cast and crew on an actual trip to Malta to shoot scenes on location.
One exception was Alison Steadman, who wasn’t present during the Malta scenes, because it was thought that Rachel’s mother-in-law Sue didn’t have enough of a reason to be part of the reunion with her biological father from a storytelling perspective.
Instead, Sue is said to be enjoying a binge-watch marathon of ITV’s Poirot at home.
Here We Go returns to BBC One and iPlayer on Friday 25th July 2025.
