Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era will officially release into Steam Early Access and on the Microsoft Store through Xbox PC Game Preview on April 30, 2026, after several postponements. It will also be available on PC Game Pass from day one.
This date is significant because the team behind Olden Era has been eagerly awaiting this moment for a while. The game was initially planned for Early Access release much sooner, but the launch was delayed several times as they continued to improve it. Now, after months of uncertainty, they finally have a confirmed launch date and a real countdown is underway.
A Return to Heroes With a Classic Foundation
Olden Era is officially a prequel to the beloved Heroes of Might and Magic series, returning players to the familiar lands of Enroth and Jadame. Jadame has been mentioned in previous games, but this is the first time it’s been fully featured. The game offers everything fans loved about the original series – building up empires, turn-based battles, developing heroes, managing cities, casting spells, and exploring a vast world – all with the same classic gameplay style that made it so popular.
The game’s deliberate use of nostalgia is obvious. It openly aims to recapture the feeling of classic Heroes games, specifically the turn-based strategy gameplay that fans remember most fondly. However, it’s also designed to be accessible to new players, not just a trip down memory lane for long-time fans.

What Will Be in Early Access
The first playable version of the game will feature the beginning of the story campaign, six different playable groups, and three ways to play – both by yourself and with others. The story focuses on the nations of Jadame, who must put aside their differences and work together to fight the Hive, a dangerous insect-like enemy controlled by a powerful demon.
Currently, six factions are available: Temple, Necropolis, Sylvan, Dungeon, Hive, and one more that was hinted at earlier. This faction variety is crucial for Olden Era, as the success of a Heroes-style game depends on having towns, armies, and creatures that feel unique and encourage players to start new campaigns.
The Game Is Offering More Than Just Campaign Play
Beyond its main story, Olden Era plans to offer a variety of game modes. It will feature both automatically generated and carefully designed maps, pre-built challenges, an Arena mode, a mode focused on a single hero, a traditional Classic mode, and multiplayer options. This diverse selection is key, as it aims to appeal to players who enjoy story-driven campaigns as well as those who prefer quick, repeatable battles and customized games.
As a long-time Heroes of Might and Magic fan, what I’ve always loved about the series isn’t just completing it, but replaying it endlessly. It’s all about trying different factions, exploring new maps, and perfecting your strategies and battle tactics. So, if the Olden Era expansion can capture that feeling of replayability – that constant loop of experimentation – I think it has a real shot at being something special. Just relying on nostalgia wouldn’t be enough. Thankfully, the announced game modes seem to be aiming for exactly that, which is really encouraging!
Early Access Is Meant to Shape the Full Game
The Steam page notes that the version released on April 30th is still in development. The developers plan to refine the game based on player feedback during its Early Access phase. Future updates will include more scenarios, map options, and tools for creating maps, as well as an expanded underground map and the complete campaign story.
It’s common for strategy games to evolve over time, and this approach offers real potential. Success in this genre depends heavily on things like balanced gameplay, a good rhythm, clear information, distinct factions, and lasting appeal – all areas where player feedback can make a big difference. The risk with early access is that developers might overpromise and underdeliver. However, this plan seems more comprehensive than simply releasing an unfinished game and promising to fix problems later.
The Demo Helped Build Real Momentum
One reason people are excited about the upcoming release of Olden Era is the positive reaction to its demo. Released on Steam to celebrate the game’s 30th anniversary, the demo let players try out four different factions, complete a tutorial, and play through three game modes without any time limits. This allowed players to experience the game firsthand and provided the developers with valuable feedback before the Early Access launch.
The demo generated a lot of interest on Steam, with many people adding the game to their wishlists – a key factor in maintaining attention despite the launch being delayed. It’s clear there’s still a demand for this type of traditional fantasy strategy game, but the new release needs to live up to expectations and truly deserve the comparison to its inspirations, rather than simply using the established name.
April 30 Is the Date Fans Have Been Waiting For
Okay, so here’s the big news: Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is finally hitting Early Access on April 30, 2026! I’ll be able to grab it on Steam and through the Xbox PC Game Preview on the Microsoft Store. And the best part? It’s going to be available with PC Game Pass right from day one! It’s been a long wait with all the previews and demos, but we finally have a solid release date – I’m so hyped!
The real challenge for Olden Era begins after its release. While nostalgia might attract initial players, it won’t be enough to keep them engaged long-term. The game needs to demonstrate that it’s more than just a tribute to the past; it must feel like a compelling and worthwhile experience in 2026, not just a fond memory of 1999. The launch on April 30th will be the first crucial indicator of whether it can achieve this.
