[Note: This article may reveal plot details of Superman.] In the year 300 A.D., Earth witnessed the emergence of extraordinary beings, referred to as METAHUMANS. These beings marked the advent of a time where Gods and Monsters coexisted. This is how James Gunn’s Superman film begins, welcoming viewers into the revamped DC Universe. Three years following Kal-El, the Kryptonian Last Son (David Corenswet), unveiling himself as Superman, we encounter the Justice League: Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion). These superheroes are backed by the LordTech corporation and its CEO, Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn).
Despite just Guy and the upcoming recruit, Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), being the ones who accept the team’s “Justice Gang” title, this name seems to be a tribute to the heroic legacy of the world’s original super-team: the Justice Society of America.
Lois Lane, a fearless Daily Planet reporter played by Rachel Brosnahan, delves into Superman’s mysterious disappearance within a pocket universe. This universe is being used by Lex Luthor to imprison an alien captive, preventing Superman from hindering the Boravian invasion. In her quest for information, she heads to the Justice Gang’s headquarters in Metropolis, located at the Hall of Justice. As Lois tries to persuade Guy for a jailbreak, a wall mural showcasing superheroes from the JSA’s golden age is visible, adding character to the former train station (the Cincinnati Union Terminal, which served as inspiration for the Hall of Justice in the ’70s Super Friends cartoon).
The DCU JSA
I took a closer look at the mural, and it became clear that World War II heroes like Jay Garrick, the initial Flash, and Wesley Dodds, the original Sandman, were part of the Justice Society of America (JSA) in the 1940s, as depicted in All-Star Comics #3. Gardner Fox, a prominent writer for both Flash Comics and Adventure Comics, created these characters and later formed the Justice League in The Brave and the Bold #28 in 1960. In this first gathering of the JSA, you’ll find characters such as Hawkman, Dr. Fate, the Spectre, Hourman, the Atom, and Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern.
The mural also showcases several characters: Ted Grant, formerly a heavyweight boxing champ transformed into Wildcat, a masked vigilante; Gardner Grayle’s armored figure as Atomic Knight; Jon Valor, the 16th-century swashbuckler known as the Black Pirate; Dominic Mndawe, famously recognized as Freedom Beast from the Global Guardians; Brian Kent, a 6th-century knight rebranded Silent Knight; Amethyst, the enchanting princess hailing from the mystical realm of Gemworld; and Paco Ramone, a Detroit-based superhero gifted with sonic powers who goes by Vibe in his Justice League team.
Similar to the constantly shifting team of the Justice League of America, the Justice Society of America has expanded its ranks to include characters such as Dinah Lance’s Black Canary, legacy heroes like Starman, Sand (formerly known as Golden Boy, ward of the Sandman), Star-Spangled Kid, Kendra Saunders who goes by Hawkgirl, and Michael Holt, the successor to Mister Terrific after Terry Sloane.
During the promotion of Superman, Gunn mentioned that this film is loaded with Easter eggs more than any other movie he’s made. He explained, ‘Every character in the movie is essentially from the comic books.’ Every individual in Lex’s control room, all those people are characters from the comics. Each street in the film is named after a comic book writer or artist. The majority of businesses either carry names of comic book writers and artists, or they are based on establishments within the DC Universe as depicted in the comics.
In the subsequent part of our production, you’ll encounter an impressive, colossal mural detailing the tale of metahumans in the DC Universe – a sight that will undoubtedly captivate viewers once we share those images. The director added, “It gets deep! It’s enjoyable, and crafting this world was genuinely entertaining for me. One of the aspects I adored about DC is its distinctiveness from places like New York and Los Angeles. Instead, it boasts Gotham, Central City, and Evergreen – worlds with their unique sets of rules.
DC Studios’ Superman is now playing only in theaters.
