Highguard had a good launch as a free-to-play game, but the number of players has fallen off quickly, especially on PC where we can see the numbers. A major issue seems to be the map size – they’re quite large, and with only 3v3 matches available, much of the map often feels empty.
To address this, Wildlight Entertainment is testing a new weekend mode where two teams of five players can compete. This expands the existing raid mode by adding four more players, while the traditional 3v3 mode will still be playable.
This limited-time mode now gives you 10 lives instead of 6, and it takes a little longer to respawn after you’re eliminated.
The announcement about the new bonus game mode also included this message: “We’re constantly working to make the game run better, and this update includes several improvements – especially for 3v3 matches! However, adding more players (like in the 5v5 mode) won’t necessarily make the game run faster. Please remember that when you’re trying out 5v5!”
Wildlight Entertainment is hoping a new update will bring back players after a strong launch that saw over 97,000 people playing at the same time. Currently, the game has fewer than 10,000 players on PC after five days.
Our review of Highguard for the PS5 is now available, and we gave it a 6 out of 10. We found it to be an enjoyable but somewhat overwhelming shooter that doesn’t quite stand out compared to games like The Finals. While it might appeal to players who like a tactical approach, and the developers seem dedicated to making improvements, Highguard tries to do too much at once, ultimately not excelling in any one area.
