After Wildlight Entertainment announced the permanent closure of Highguard, the game’s director, Chad Grenier, shared a detailed look at what happened through social media. He revealed that Highguard actually attracted a significant number of players, even comparing its initial numbers to those of Apex Legends at launch. Grenier also shared other interesting data, such as player locations and the most popular characters.
When it first launched, Highguard attracted over 2 million players globally. Players typically spent about 91 minutes per session playing the game, averaging around 3.5 matches each time they logged in. According to Grenier, these numbers are very positive.
The PlayStation 5 was the most popular platform for players, with over twice as many users as Xbox and PC combined. Xbox came in second, followed by Steam. Most players were located in the United States, while Japan had the second-largest number of players.
So, the developers shared some cool stats from the game! Apparently, Scarlet was way more popular than anyone else – she was picked a whopping 1.56 million times! They originally called her Skye, but Scarlet clearly won out. Atticus was second place, but not even close. As for weapons, the Vanguard was a total beast, racking up 11.75 million kills! And most matches ended when someone blew up the generator, which makes sense – that’s usually how it goes, right?
Although players generally liked the new 5v5 mode, it seems most Highguard players still preferred the original 3v3 mode. However, the data doesn’t include matches played in the Raid Rush mode. Even after the 5v5 mode was released, 3v3 continued to be played in over 40 percent of all matches. Grenier also shared that 92 percent of new players completed the training mission, which is a very positive sign, similar to the completion rate seen when Apex Legends first launched.
Wildlight Entertainment has announced that the game Highguard will be shutting down. In a social media post, they thanked the 2 million players who tried the game and provided feedback, but explained they weren’t able to maintain a large enough player base for the game to continue long-term. The servers will close on March 12th, and the studio encouraged players to enjoy a few final matches before then.
I’m hearing that Wildlight Entertainment is giving Highguard one last big update before they move on! It’s adding a new Warden character, a fresh weapon, revamped skill trees, and a cool account-wide progression system. If you haven’t tried it yet, or want to jump back in for one last hurrah, Highguard is still free to play on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Over two million people around the world gave our game a try, and I want to thank each and every one of you. Considering the negative reaction we received between the announcement and launch, the fact that you all played it is incredibly meaningful to us. Thank you for your support.

Scarlet was clearly the most popular character choice! Interestingly, her original name was Skye, inspired by one of our developers – that’s why you might still see ‘Skye’ in some of our data. Similarly, Kai was initially going to be named Jade before the game launched.

The Vanguard had the most kills (during development was db51)

Almost all new players – 92% – finished the game’s tutorial. This is a great result, comparable to how many players completed the tutorial when Apex Legends first launched.

Honestly, even after we launched 5v5 and Raid Rush, my friends and I kept going back to 3v3 – it was still our favorite way to play! I checked the stats, and while the graph doesn’t show data after Raid Rush came out, you can clearly see 3v3 (in blue) was way more popular than 5v5 (orange) and even the ranked mode (green) that came out later.
