Highguard Players on PS5 Are Seemingly Getting Refunds for In-Game Purchases

Man, it really stinks that the Highguard servers are gone – especially for those of us who spent money on the game. But there’s some good news for PlayStation 5 players! A lot of us are actually getting refunds for our Highguard purchases. I saw a post from a BlueSky user named Kashmoe who shared a screenshot showing they got $16.19 back from Sony for 1,600 Highguard Gold. Hopefully, everyone else on PS5 gets the same treatment!

A Polish BlueSky user named Cal also received a refund from PlayStation even though they hadn’t asked for one. They said it seems Sony is proactively refunding players for purchases made in the game Highguard. “I didn’t request a refund, but I received 59 Polish Zloty back today—that’s great!” they shared.

A ResetEra user named RedBullCola reports receiving a full refund for all their purchases in Highguard. They also point out that Steam and Microsoft haven’t offered similar refunds yet. It’s unknown whether this refund initiative is coming directly from the game’s developer, Wildlight Entertainment, or if Sony is covering the costs.

Wildlight Entertainment announced on March 4th that the servers for Highguard would be shut down on March 12th. Despite the closure announcement, the studio continued development and released a large final update just a day later. This update included significant new features like a new skill tree and a progression system that applies to your entire account.

Since its release, over two million players have explored the world of Highguard. The development team expressed their gratitude on social media, thanking players for their feedback, creative contributions, and belief in the game.

We’re sad to announce that the game won’t be able to continue long-term, even with all the effort and dedication from our team and players. The servers will be shut down on March 12th. We hope you’ll have a chance to play a few more matches before then and show your support one last time.

Before it was cancelled, there were reports about the development of Highguard. One report indicated that Wildlight Entertainment decided against letting people outside the company test the game. They were trying to recreate the success they’d experienced with Apex Legends—and its surprise release—when they were still working at Respawn Entertainment.

Despite the difficulties during the creation of Highguard, people who worked at the studio generally described it as a positive place, noting it was collaborative, open, and a place where employees enjoyed their jobs.

Reports suggest that Wildlight Entertainment wasn’t as independent as they claimed. They were secretly funded by TiMi Studio Group, a part of Tencent, which was described as the primary, but hidden, source of financial support for the game.
