The famous line from Field of Dreams says “If you build it, they will come,” but Highguard is getting plenty of attention because it’s slowly falling apart. After its website went offline and caused concern, Wildlight Entertainment explained they’re updating it. However, don’t anticipate the game returning to service anytime in the near future.
A developer mentioned on the game’s Discord that transferring and simplifying something is needed, though they didn’t specify a timeline. They also said it’s not a high priority right now, as the main damage to the game’s reputation has already occurred. Their current focus is on releasing updates and new content to make improvements.
It’s important to remember that Wildlight Entertainment had significant layoffs soon after releasing Highguard. While a small team is still working on the game, it’s unclear if their planned content updates through December will still happen. Only time will tell, but with the number of players currently playing – especially on Steam – the situation looks increasingly worrying.
Released on January 26th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, Highguard initially gained attention – and some controversy – when it was announced at The Game Awards 2025. While some criticized its gameplay and genre as unoriginal, a lot of the negative reaction actually came from the fact that the game was revealed last minute, rather than being a surprise release as originally planned.
For a more in-depth look, check out our full review, but Wildlight has been rapidly adding improvements and new content. They initially launched a temporary 5v5 mode which proved popular and is now a permanent feature. Earlier this month, they also released Episode 2, which includes a new Warden character, map, story cutscene, and a new type of mount. We’ll keep you updated on future developments, and you can find more information about the game’s funding—and TiMi Studio Group (owned by Tencent)—here.
