Hilary Duff is coming clean about the reality of her family life.
Hilary Duff, known for her role in Lizzie McGuire, recently spoke about her strained relationship with her sister, Haylie Duff, and her father, Bob Duff. She explained that she wrote songs about them on her new album, luck…or something.
Hilary recently told Glamour that family has the biggest impact on who we are. She explained that while we’re born into families, that doesn’t guarantee they’ll always remain close. She shared this in an interview published on February 17th.
As the 38-year-old explained, you can only manage your own responsibilities and immediate surroundings. Having experienced a difficult life and complicated family dynamics – something they know isn’t uncommon – they felt now was the right time to share their story. They simply felt ready to talk about it.
Hilary Duff’s new album, releasing on February 20th, features two songs that hint at complicated relationships with her family. One song, “We Don’t Talk,” appears to be about a falling out with her sister, Haylie, 40, and explores the reasons why they’ve stopped speaking.
Hilary sings about being confused about what went wrong in the relationship, wondering if a different approach would have changed things. She asks for a chance to explain her side, and later describes the breakup as feeling like she was suddenly and completely cut off emotionally.
As a longtime fan, it’s been really sad to see Hilary and Haylie Duff seemingly drift apart. I haven’t seen photos of them together since 2019, and they don’t seem to interact much on social media anymore. Things felt especially tense when Haylie publicly liked an essay by Ashley Tisdale – it talked about breaking away from a difficult mom group, and Ashley specifically mentioned Hilary being involved. Then, to make things even more noticeable, Haylie and Ashley were spotted having dinner together shortly after! It definitely made fans like me wonder what’s going on between the sisters.
Even though there’s been talk, Hilary and Haylie Duff haven’t said anything publicly about what caused the trouble between them.

Hilary explores her complicated relationship with her father in her new song, “The Optimist.”
Hilary Duff sings about wanting to be able to sleep on airplanes and wishing her father truly loved her. She shares 13-year-old son Luca with her ex-husband, Mike Comrie, and has three younger children – Banks (7), Mae (4), and Townes (21 months) – with her husband, Matthew Koma.
Hilary Duff’s parents, Bob and Susan Duff, were married for two decades before a lengthy and difficult divorce. During the 2008 legal proceedings, Bob was jailed for disobeying a court order after selling family property without permission. He later claimed that Hilary and Haylie’s celebrity status played a role in the breakdown of their marriage.

In a 2008 interview with Inside Edition, he explained that he and Susan drifted apart because she was very focused on their daughters’ careers. He also admitted to being unfaithful during their marriage and expressed deep regret for the pain it caused their daughters.
Hilary is excited to share more about her life in her upcoming project, luck…or something, and also to show fans a new side of herself as a musician.
She explained to Glamour that she was eager to share her work because she wanted to explore her creativity and create something authentic to who she is today. She also felt many people could relate to the significant life changes she’s experienced over the past decade or so.
