Hilary Duffis letting the rain fall down on her most intimate thoughts.
Hilary Duff released her new single, “Roommates,” on January 16th, a delicate song about missing the excitement and passion in a relationship. She described the song in an Instagram post as capturing that feeling when life gets overwhelming and you long for simpler times – before responsibilities like kids, finances, and self-doubt creep in. It’s about wanting to reconnect with yourself and rediscover what makes you happy.
The singer, age 38, worked with Brian Phillips and her husband, Matthew Koma, to capture a feeling of natural connection in both the song and its music video. But it appears her partner is content staying in a comfortable, but perhaps unexciting, phase of their relationship.
This becomes clear right away when Hilary acknowledges that raising the topic would likely cause more problems than it solves.
She admits it’s hard to talk about, almost painful, but she’s trying to subtly let him know what she needs. She explains that physical touch is really important to her, and she doesn’t want to start feeling resentful – she just wants a simple solution to make things better.
The actress, known for being open and truthful, is now sharing some embarrassing but sweet moments from a past relationship.
She sings about wanting only the exciting start of a romance – “I only want the beginning…” – and fondly recalls passionate, carefree moments, like secret meetings and the thrill of new love. She describes wanting the best parts – “the highlights, ten out of ten” – and the simple joy of connection, like holding hands.
As shown in the music video, where Hilary frantically pursues her significant other as rain begins to fall, she’ll only rediscover that spark by ending the relationship—which is exactly what happens.
“Roommates” was released about two months after her first single from the album, “Mature,” gained a lot of attention. The synth-pop song led to speculation that it was about her previous relationship with Joel Madden and their significant age difference. However, her husband had a different idea about who inspired the track.
In a December interview with Hilary on Apple Music 1, Matthew jokingly suggested the subject of fan speculation might be Bernie Sanders. He explained he feels less intimidated by the 84-year-old politician compared to other men fans have mentioned, adding with a laugh, “I have a few of my own.”

Hilary Duff and her husband share three children: Banks, 10, Mae, 4, and Townes, who is 20 months old. She also has a 13-year-old son, Luca, with her ex-husband, Mike Comrie. While they haven’t said what specifically inspired her new song, Hilary has publicly thanked her husband for encouraging her to get back to making music.
She explained on the November 5th episode of the Therapuss podcast with Jake Shane that after ten years away from music, being married, and reaching the age of 38, she finally felt ready to understand and complete her life story.
