Just a heads-up before you read on: this piece touches on the really difficult topic of pregnancy loss and miscarriage. I wanted to give you a warning because it can be upsetting, and I want you to be prepared.
Stefan Golaszewski first gained recognition as the writer of popular comedies like Him & Her and Marriage. Before that, he was a member of the comedy group Cowards, alongside performers Tim Key, Tom Basden, and Lloyd Woolf.
After transitioning to drama writing in 2022 with the BBC series Marriage, Golaszewski returns with Babies, a powerful six-part series exploring the challenges faced by a couple dealing with repeated pregnancy loss and miscarriage.
In a recent interview for our series, The TopMob Writers’ Room, which explores the minds of screenwriters, Golaszewski discussed his show Cowards and shared that, although he and his former collaborators still stay in contact, a future work project together doesn’t seem probable.
We stopped because everyone started focusing on other projects, he explained. He doesn’t think he’ll be writing comedy again in the near future, so a return is doubtful.
He explained that after finishing the show ‘Mum,’ he felt comedy had limitations when it came to exploring deeper truths. He realized the very nature of comedy and what audiences expect from it restricted how honestly he could portray things.
I felt creatively stuck as a writer, like I’d reached a limit, so I switched to drama hoping for a fresh start.
The comedy series Him & Her, featuring Russell Tovey and Sarah Solemani, aired for four seasons on BBC Three from 2010 to 2013. Mum, starring Lesley Manville and Peter Mullan, followed, running for three seasons between 2016 and 2019.
In a recent discussion on The TopMob Writers’ Room, Golaszewski shared the inspiration behind his series, Babies, and gave a preview of what audiences can anticipate from the show, which features Paapa Essiedu and Siobhán Cullen.

The show ‘Babies’ tells a love story centered around a couple experiencing the loss of a pregnancy. While not based on my own life, I’ve personally dealt with similar challenges, and I realized there was a need for more open and honest conversation about this difficult topic. I wanted to create something that acknowledged the pain but also offered a sense of hope and healing by openly addressing it.
The aim is to offer support to those experiencing miscarriage, who often feel isolated, and to help others understand what it truly means. Often, miscarriage is treated as a medical issue rather than acknowledging the deep grief involved, and we hope this show can bridge that gap and foster empathy.
“So that was kind of the impetus, really.”

Okay, so I cover TV dramas for TopMob – basically, I write about shows on streaming services and traditional channels. Before this, I was in PR, starting at a business-to-business agency and then moving on to Fremantle, a big international production company. I actually have a background in both creative writing and journalism; I studied English and Theatre at university, and I’m a qualified journalist with an NCTJ Level 5 Diploma.
