In my perspective as a film critic, the gripping question at the heart of the movie “HIM” is: What price are you willing to pay to be the greatest ever? This dilemma unfolds around Cameron Cade, an up-and-coming quarterback, skillfully portrayed by Tyriq Withers, who previously starred in ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’. In this chilling production, produced by Jordan Peele, Cameron finds mentorship under the legendary USFF player Isaiah White, played by Marlon Wayans. Isaiah poses a hard-hitting question to Cameron: “Do you want to play at your peak? Do you aspire to be a legend?” he asks, setting the stage for a chilling horror that unfolds in cinemas starting September 19. As Isaiah puts it, “Let me tell you something: this isn’t a game.
The trailer shifts towards a menacing tone as White intensely trains Cade and his teammates to the extent that they bleed. “In this game, aggression is appreciated,” White asserts over clips of training camp growing progressively hazardous and the coach showing signs of instability. “Just how determined is Cameron Cade?
In the middle of this trailer, the phrase “Greatness calls for sacrifice” is displayed amidst scenes featuring various strange characters, such as a horned demon, a masked gnome, and even a disconnected pig’s face.
Under the guidance of director Justin Tipping, the film titled “HIM” is depicted as an intense exploration delving into the hidden realms of stardom, worship, and relentless pursuit of greatness, even at the expense of one’s own wellbeing, according to its synopsis.
As the football scouting Combine approaches, Cam encounters a life-altering incident when a crazed fan assaults him, causing severe brain injury that might end his career. However, hope emerges when his idol, Isaiah White – an eight-time Championship quarterback and influential figure – steps in to mentor Cam at their secluded retreat, which they share with Elsie White, Isaiah’s famous wife. The narrative unfolds as Cam’s training intensifies, but the charm of his mentor transforms into something sinister, plunging him into a perplexing abyss that could cost him dearly.
Jordan Peele, the award-winning director known for movies like “Get Out”, “Us”, and “Nope” through his production company Monkeypaw Productions, teams up with Ian Cooper (“Candyman”), Win Rosenfeld (“Monkey Man”), and Jamal M. Watson (sports drama “Sprinter”) on this project. The main cast is spearheaded by Keenen Wayans and Craig Robinson, joined by Julia Fox (“Uncut Gems”) as Elsie White, with Tim Heidecker (“I Think You Should Leave”) and Jim Jefferies (“Legit”) completing the roster. Making their feature film debuts in supporting roles are MMA fighter Maurice Greene, hip hop artists Guapdad 4000, and Grammy nominee Tierra Whack.
HIM touches down in theaters Sept. 19.
