Hit horror movie Obsession gets digital release date pulled from schedule

The hit horror film, Obsession, will now arrive on streaming platforms later than expected, following a successful run in theaters. This mirrors what happened with the film Project Hail Mary earlier this year.

As a total movie fan, I’ve been hearing so much about this film – it’s written and directed by Curry Baker, who used to be a YouTuber. What’s really amazing is how popular it’s become! People are just discovering it and telling their friends, and it’s actually done something incredible – it’s the first movie since E.T. back in 1982 to actually increase its box office numbers each weekend for the first three weeks. That’s a huge deal!

Following the film’s success, Focus Features has decided to keep it in theaters for a longer run. It was originally scheduled to be available for digital rental and purchase today, June 2nd, but that release has been postponed with no new date announced.

Obsession premiered in theaters on May 15th and is still playing in cinemas. Because ticket sales are currently increasing, it will likely be several more weeks before it’s released for home viewing.

Despite being made with a tiny budget of under $1 million, the film has already earned $150 million, making it one of the most profitable releases in recent years.

We’ll let you know as soon as we have a confirmed streaming release date. Until then, the quickest way to see the movie is to go to a theater.

I remember reading an interview with Jason Blum in Variety where he talked about release windows, and he made it pretty clear he’s a strong advocate for films having a good, lengthy run in cinemas before moving elsewhere. He really believes in that traditional theatrical experience.

He noted it was fantastic that the audience understood what was happening. You’d expect them to want to purchase the movie for home viewing, but instead, they were excited the film was continuing to play in cinemas.

People love going to the theater, and they’re choosing to support it over the ease of watching something at home to help keep local theaters thriving.

As a film buff, I was immediately intrigued by Obsession. It takes the familiar ‘be careful what you wish for’ trope – think The Monkey’s Paw – and gives it a modern spin. The story centers around Bear, a guy working at a record store, who wishes his long-time crush, Nikki, would fall for him. Let’s just say he quickly discovers there are consequences to getting exactly what you want…

A guy desperate to win over his crush makes a wish on a strange willow tree, and it actually comes true. But he quickly learns that getting what you want isn’t always a good thing, and his wish has a frightening cost.

Obsession is now showing in UK cinemas.
