The popular detective series is moving to Netflix at the start of next year. While fans will be glad it’s still available to stream, this change isn’t entirely positive.
Starting January 14th, you’ll be able to watch Veronica Mars on Netflix. However, Netflix won’t have all the seasons. Only the first three seasons will be available. The fourth season and the movie will still be available elsewhere: the movie remains on HBO Max, and the fourth season will continue streaming exclusively on Hulu and Disney+.
To watch all of Veronica Mars by 2026, viewers will likely need subscriptions to three separate streaming platforms. This fragmented availability is due to the show’s complicated and somewhat unusual production history, which may be disappointing for new and returning fans alike.
Even though Veronica Mars had a dedicated following, it was almost canceled several times during its first few seasons because of low ratings. The show ended after season three, but fans successfully crowdfunded a movie to continue the story, bringing back creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell. The Veronica Mars movie, released in 2014, was very well-received by fans of the show. It’s currently available to stream on HBO Max, as it was distributed by Warner Bros., but that could change if Netflix buys Warner Bros.
The success of the Veronica Mars movie kept the show relevant, leading Hulu to acquire the rights for a fourth season. Kristen Bell and Jason Thomas reprised their roles in the revival, which debuted on Hulu in 2019 with eight episodes. Similar to the movie, it was created with support from the show’s fans. Originally intended as a single-season event, this currently represents the last chapter in the Veronica Mars story.
Will Veronica Mars Ever Get a Season 5?
There haven’t been any significant updates about a potential Season 5 of Veronica Mars. While the show remains popular, the Hulu revival only lasted one season, indicating that another continuation isn’t currently in the works. Kristen Bell is now focused on other projects, like Nobody Wants This on Netflix, and the show’s creator, Rob Thomas, is currently a writer and executive producer for ABC’s High Potential.
Even though it first aired over twenty years ago, Veronica Mars still has a dedicated and passionate fanbase. Many consider it to be one of the greatest teen dramas of all time. Because of its popularity and the fact that it’s been revived before, there’s always hope for a fifth season or another movie continuation.
Fans of Veronica Mars can also enjoy a couple of novels that expand the show’s story. Created by Rob Thomas and author Jennifer Graham, these books fill the gap between the 2014 movie and Season 4. The first, Veronica Mars: The Thousand Dollar Tan Line, came out in 2014, and the second, Veronica Mars: Mr. Kiss and Tell, was released in 2015. The latter reveals important details about Veronica and her family and is officially considered part of the show’s storyline, along with the first book.
In 2014, a web series called Play It Again, Dick launched alongside the Veronica Mars movie. The series stars a character from the original show who is determined to get his own spinoff made. Many of the actors from Veronica Mars, including Kristen Bell, make guest appearances as themselves. Play It Again, Dick isn’t intended to be a core part of the Veronica Mars story, but it’s a lighthearted and enjoyable extra for fans.
