Fans have received exciting news about a new project from Bette Midler just before Halloween. She recently shared an update on how it’s progressing.
Bette Midler discussed the long, 30-year wait between the original *Hocus Pocus* and its first sequel while on Andy Cohen’s *Watch What Happens Live*. She hinted that fans won’t have to wait nearly as long for another installment. “We were always asking Disney for more *Hocus Pocus*,” Midler shared, playfully referencing the film’s huge popularity. “Billions of views – I’d never even heard of that number before!” she joked.
Midler said she received a script, and thought much of it was excellent. They’re still working on plans for a follow-up, discussing things like the budget and necessary changes to the story. She explained they’re currently figuring out the details – where it will be filmed, what it will cost, and the overall direction of the project.
Released in 1993, this film follows three funny but wicked witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy) who come back to life thanks to a teenager (Omri Katz) on Halloween night in Salem, Massachusetts. Although it didn’t do well in theaters at first and received mixed reactions, it has since become a beloved cult classic.
Every year, *Hocus Pocus* continues to find new fans through television broadcasts, and it consistently draws a large audience each October. Its popularity as a cult classic was a key factor in getting the sequel, *Hocus Pocus 2*, made. The sequel premiered on Disney+ in 2022.
The first *Hocus Pocus* movie isn’t well-liked by critics, earning a 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences enjoy it much more, giving it a 72% score based on over 250,000 reviews. The recent sequel saw a surprising shift in opinions: critics liked it better (65% rating), but audiences didn’t (47% rating from over 5,000 reviews).
Another Hocus Pocus Star Confirms Involvement in Third Installment
As a huge fan of *Hocus Pocus*, I was thrilled to hear Bette Midler recently gave another update on the third film! It comes on the heels of another witch – Kathy Najimy – saying she’s totally on board with returning. She mentioned back in July, while on *Watch What Happens Live*, that she’d love to do it, and that she and the rest of the original cast have been talking to Disney about making it happen. It’s really exciting to hear they’re all interested!
Bette Midler has hinted at exciting developments for a third *Hocus Pocus* movie. The last film introduced new characters played by Sam Richardson, Whitney Peak, Belissa Escobedo, Tony Hale, and Hannah Waddingham, and followed three teenagers trying to prevent the witches from causing chaos on Halloween. While specific plot details are still secret, Midler suggests the next installment won’t take as long to arrive as the previous sequel did.
Hocus Pocus and Hocus Pocus 2 are now streaming on Disney+.
