Hocus Pocus Star Might Return for a Third Movie (Despite Her Character’s Grim Fate)

Sarah Jessica Parker recently shared that discussions regarding a potential third installment of ‘Hocus Pocus’ are being held privately, although nothing has been set in stone yet. This news was dropped during her latest interview on ‘Watch What Happens Live! with Andy Cohen’. In the chat, Parker admitted to ongoing negotiations for the long-awaited sequel. The ‘Hocus Pocus’ series has been rather quiet since the debut of its second part in 2022, which brought back the Sanderson sisters after almost three decades. Following the film’s popularity on Disney+, a third movie was confirmed in mid-2023; however, no new details had emerged until this recent announcement.

When asked about a potential third “Hocus Pocus” movie, Parker responded, “We haven’t made any definitive plans yet, but we’ve been discussing the idea.” In the first two “Hocus Pocus” films, Parker portrays Sarah Sanderson, one of the three enchanting witches known as the Sanderson Sisters, alongside Bette Midler as Winifred Sanderson and Kathy Najimy as Mary Sanderson.

In the closing scenes of “Hocus Pocus 2”, Winifred performs a potent spell which inadvertently causes Sarah and Mary Sanderson to disappear. Riddled with remorse over her magic’s tragic outcomes, Winifred subsequently joins them in disappearance following a heartfelt plea for reunion with her sisters. This implies that the three witches have left forever, lending an emotional depth to the finale. The fact that Parker proposes their comeback, even hypothetically, indicates Disney’s plans to resurrect the Sanderson Sisters in some way for the third movie.

The Long Road Towards Hocus Pocus 3

Initially, the classic movie “Hocus Pocus” built its following through regular TV broadcasts and annual re-watches over many years. In stark contrast, “Hocus Pocus 2,” released on Disney+ in 2022, was an instant success. The sequel shattered viewership records for the platform upon release, earning a spot among Disney’s most-viewed streaming titles during its debut week. Critics gave mixed to positive reviews, appreciating the returning cast’s charm and improved pacing compared to the original film. However, audiences showed much more excitement, commending the blend of nostalgia and modern storytelling. Additionally, “Hocus Pocus 2” introduced a new group of protagonists, suggesting potential paths for the series to continue without its established characters.

The success of “Hocus Pocus 2” was substantial enough for Disney to greenlight a third movie in June 2023, with the director Anne Fletcher and screenwriter Jen D’Angelo anticipated to rejoin. However, progress halted swiftly due to writers’ and actors’ strikes that halted most scripted productions in the latter half of 2023. Since then, Disney has not disclosed any production schedule, casting decisions, or release date for the sequel. Despite this, several cast members have shown interest in reprising their roles, including Midler and Najimy. Although we’re still a ways off from seeing “Hocus Pocus 3,” Parker’s recent remarks at least give fans hope that the project is alive, as active discussions about it are ongoing among its creative team.

You can now watch both “Hocus Pocus” and its sequel, “Hocus Pocus 2,” on Disney+’s streaming service. However, as of now, there’s no confirmed release date or production start for “Hocus Pocus 3.
