Since it came out in 2023, Hogwarts Legacy has remained a very popular role-playing game. Both fans of Harry Potter and RPG players have enjoyed the game, which lets you experience life as a student at Hogwarts. Now, as the game ages, many are eager for a sequel. Warner Bros. has confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is being made, but they haven’t shared many details about it yet.
While Warner Bros. and Avalanche Studios haven’t revealed much about a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, many rumors are circulating. Fans are desperate for any news about the future of the series, and are closely examining every piece of information. Recent job postings at Avalanche Studios suggest the game might include ongoing, live service features and a strong emphasis on multiplayer. However, shifting Hogwarts Legacy 2 in that direction could be a significant error.
Hogwarts Legacy Could Be The Next Victim of the “Everything Must Be Multiplayer” Trend

As a gamer, I’ve noticed a big trend lately: it seems like every studio thinks a game has to be constantly updated with new content and focus heavily on multiplayer to be successful. And honestly, there’s a reason for that – games like Marvel Rivals and the upcoming Battlefield 6 are doing great because of it. But I don’t think every game needs to follow that formula. A lot of us still just want a great single-player experience, and not everyone wants to jump into the next huge online world or live-service shooter.
After the failures of games like MultiVersus and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, you’d think Warner Bros. would be cautious. However, it seems Hogwarts Legacy 2 may try to follow the same path, hoping to succeed by using popular gaming trends and the strength of the Harry Potter brand.
Talk about a possible sequel to Hogwarts Legacy has been circulating, and now Avalanche Studios is advertising for staff to work on a “multiplayer online RPG.” Because the studio usually concentrates on a single game at a time, many players believe this points to Hogwarts Legacy 2 becoming a massive multiplayer online role-playing game. Even if it isn’t a full MMORPG, it will almost certainly feature significant multiplayer components, given that Avalanche is hiring for it now.
It’s possible Avalanche Studios is working on another multiplayer game, or even planning their next project after Hogwarts Legacy 2. However, it seems more probable they’re trying to capitalize on the current trend of multiplayer games. This approach feels misguided, though, as it misses what made Hogwarts Legacy successful and could ultimately fail.
Solid Single-Player RPGs Still Have a Place, So Let Hogwarts Legacy 2 Be One of Them

Many popular games these days focus on multiplayer experiences and ongoing live services, leading some developers to overlook the demand for single-player RPGs. The huge success of Hogwarts Legacy clearly demonstrates that people still want these types of games, so it’s surprising to hear the sequel might move away from that model. While it’s great to play with friends in games like Marvel Rivals or enjoy crossplay in Baldur’s Gate 3, a lot of players still appreciate a compelling, immersive game they can enjoy on their own.
While Hogwarts Legacy clearly benefited from being set in the popular Harry Potter universe, its success isn’t just about the established brand. Beyond the fun of exploring Hogwarts, the game offers a fully-featured, open-world RPG experience specifically designed for players who prefer to play alone. Many gamers want a relaxing escape where they don’t have to worry about coordinating with others or dealing with the challenges of online play. Hogwarts Legacy provides that escape, offering a beautiful and immersive magical world to enjoy at your own pace.
Turning Hogwarts Legacy 2 into a multiplayer game with ongoing updates would miss the point of what players loved about the original. Fans appreciate the relaxing, self-paced gameplay of Hogwarts Legacy, and the freedom to explore and enjoy its story within a beloved magical world. Adding other players to that experience, or making the game dependent on them, would fundamentally change what made the first game special and wouldn’t feel like a true sequel.
A Harry Potter MMORPG could definitely be successful. The continued popularity of The Lord of the Rings Online proves that fans enjoy connecting with others and exploring beloved fictional worlds together, and a multiplayer Harry Potter game would likely be very popular. However, calling it Hogwarts Legacy 2 wouldn’t be fair to those who appreciated the first Hogwarts Legacy as its own unique experience.
