Hogwarts Legacy has received a new update, over two years after it first came out. Even as Harry Potter fans eagerly anticipate Hogwarts Legacy 2-which appears to be a brand new game-the developers at Avalanche Software and publisher WB Games are still adding to the original. Although major content additions seem unlikely and updates aren’t happening as often, the game is still being supported, as demonstrated by this recent change.
Players who already own Hogwarts Legacy on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PS4, and PS5 won’t find any changes in this update. The new features are exclusive to Xbox users. This is because the update adds support for Xbox Play Anywhere, a feature Microsoft first launched back in 2016.
What This New Feature Does
Thanks to Xbox Play Anywhere, fans of Hogwarts Legacy can enjoy the game on both Xbox and PC with just one purchase. This feature includes both cross-save – meaning your progress carries over – and cross-buy. If you already own the game on Windows 10/11, you now automatically have the Xbox version as well. Similarly, if you own the Xbox version, you also get the PC version of the Harry Potter game.
It might feel like this update is arriving late, but a lot of people are Hogwarts Legacy players still, even in 2025. In fact, the game recently reached 13,444 players at its peak on Steam in the last day. So, this new feature will be useful for quite a few people.
“Great News”
It’s not surprising that players – both those already affected and those who might be – are pleased with this news. Xbox Play Anywhere isn’t a new feature, but many popular games haven’t supported it until now, so it’s great to see another big title – especially one of the generation’s most popular – add it.
One fan shared, “Fantastic news – I might revisit it on PC in the future, and now I won’t have to buy it again!” Another commenter said: “Awesome! I’ll be completing the last achievements on my Xbox Ally.”
If you don’t yet own Hogwarts Legacy, you’re missing out on a top game from 2023, according to our official review of the Harry Potter game. Right now, though, the Microsoft Store isn’t offering any discounts on the open-world RPG. However, we expect that to change during the holiday season.
With that being said, please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below, or continue the discussion on the ComicBook Forum.
