Netflix is buying Warner Bros. Discovery for $82.7 billion. This deal includes all of Warner Bros. Discovery’s video game studios and the rights to their games.
If the acquisition is completed, Netflix will own several game studios, including NetherRealm Studios (the creators of Mortal Kombat), Avalanche (developers of Hogwarts Legacy), and others like TT Games and Rocksteady. This also includes the rights to popular franchises like Harry Potter, DC Comics properties, and Game of Thrones.
Netflix announced the deal on its website, explaining that it will unite two leading entertainment companies. The combination will bring Netflix’s cutting-edge technology, worldwide audience, and top-rated streaming platform together with Warner Bros.’ 100 years of creating amazing stories.
Netflix’s Ted Sarandos explained that by adding Warner Bros.’ vast collection of content—including iconic films like Casablanca and Citizen Kane, and popular series such as Harry Potter and Friends—to Netflix’s own hits like Stranger Things, KPop Demon Hunters, and Squid Game, they will be able to deliver even more entertainment people enjoy. He believes this combination will help shape the future of storytelling and provide audiences with a wider range of beloved content.
When it comes to video games, it’s unclear what the future holds for the developers currently owned by Warner Bros. While Hogwarts Legacy was a hit, Warner Bros. hasn’t consistently found success in gaming, and has experienced some significant failures, such as the Suicide Squad game.
Recent reports suggest Rocksteady, the studio behind the Batman: Arkham games, may be working on a new project in that world. Meanwhile, the planned Wonder Woman game has been cancelled, and a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is anticipated within the next few years.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced that the merger of the two companies will allow them to share their incredible stories with a wider audience. You can find more details about their plans here: [link].
