It’s been a little over three years since Hogwarts Legacy allowed fans to explore the Wizarding World, and it’s still incredibly popular. For many who grew up loving Harry Potter, the game fulfills a childhood dream of attending Hogwarts. Beyond that, Hogwarts Legacy is a remarkably large and detailed game, which is why players continue to discover new secrets and hidden surprises even now, three years after its release.
Hogwarts Legacy takes place long before the Harry Potter stories, but it’s full of hidden references and details that enrich the wizarding world. Many of the game’s optional quests reveal interesting information about wizarding history. Recently, a player discovered a detail that explains the origins of the basilisk – the giant serpent from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The game might finally answer the question of how Hogwarts ended up with such a dangerous creature.
Hogwarts Legacy Journal Entry Sheds Light on Basilisk Origins

Like many open-world games, Hogwarts Legacy is filled with notes and books players can find. Those who read these texts often discover extra details about the game’s story. Because the game is set in the world of Harry Potter, these details frequently include hidden references, or Easter Eggs, to the original books. Recently, a player completing the quest ‘In the Shadow of the Study’ found a reference to the basilisk – the giant serpent Harry fights in Chamber of Secrets.
Redditor @DeVito8704 shared that they still discover new details after 160 hours of gameplay. They recently found a clear reference to the Basilisk while reading a page from Slytherin’s diary, with a screenshot showing Slytherin’s thoughts on Muggle-born students at Hogwarts.
This is obvious a reference to the Basilisk. I swear, I love this game so much! Even after 160 hours, I still find something new every time I play.

Okay, so I was reading through some old stuff, and it’s pretty creepy. This Slytherin guy is seriously disturbed by seeing Muggle-born students around. He’s decided to basically put the basilisk – yeah, that basilisk – into a super deep sleep in its chamber. He says it’ll stay that way until someone who thinks like him wakes it up. It’s totally obvious he’s talking about Tom Riddle, who we all know becomes Voldemort. Basically, he’s planning for Voldemort to unleash the basilisk later on. It’s a really unsettling foreshadowing moment, honestly.
This journal entry finally explains how the basilisk survived in the Chamber of Secrets for centuries, between the time of Salazar Slytherin and Lord Voldemort. It also reveals Slytherin’s cruel nature, proving he was a truly wicked wizard.
After one player shared a hidden detail they found in the game, other fans chimed in with similar discoveries. It seems this isn’t the only nod to basilisks and their history within the game; one fan even found some basilisk lore in a “random cave” and praised all the hidden references. Even though a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy might be a while off, there’s still a lot to find for players exploring the first open-world Harry Potter RPG.
