Holland Ending Explained: What Happens to Fred?

**Warning: Contains full spoilers for Holland.**

In television and movies alike, Nicole Kidman has developed a knack for portraying characters in family-centric suspense stories, where an apparently perfect existence is disrupted by a hidden truth. The upcoming movie “Holland” falls neatly into this pattern.

The movie represents the second work by director Mimi Cave from Fresh, and it’s known for its script, which was once highly sought-after in Hollywood. It first appeared on the Black List in 2013, a compilation of the most promising unproduced screenplays.

At that point, a project was being worked on, intended to be helmed by renowned documentarian Errol Morris, featuring Naomi Watts and Bryan Cranston as leads. However, production halted, resulting in a significant pause before the initiative regained momentum with a fresh team of actors and filmmakers.

The story unfolds in a town named after Michigan, initially settled by Dutch immigrants during the 1840s and heavily influenced by Dutch culture, with Nicole Kidman portraying Nancy Vandergroot, a married school teacher who starts to harbor doubts about her husband Fred (Matthew Macfadyen) being unfaithful.

However, when she partners with colleague Dave, played by Gael García Bernal, to scrutinize his actions, two significant events unfold.

Initially, she starts nurturing romantic sentiments towards Dave, which leads her into a personal affair. Later on, she uncovers a much more sinister truth about her husband’s hidden past than she ever anticipated…

Holland ending explained: What happens to Fred?

It quickly becomes clear through Nancy and Dave’s investigation that Fred is engaged in something shady. Their findings in his hotel room reveal various questionable items such as handcuffs, underwear, and dog treats.

However, the significant turning point occurs when Nancy chooses to scrutinize more closely the intricate model railway that Fred has meticulously worked on throughout most of the movie.

It becomes clear upon further investigation that some homes within the model bear the names of female residents, and it’s discovered that these women are all relatively young and were killed recently.

It seems that Fred is not only habitually unfaithful, but also a repeated murderer. Shockingly, he has been keeping track of his victims and the sites of their demise on his cherished map. Quite chilling.

Unfortunately, the discovery arrives too late to prevent Fred from taking another life. Unbeknownst to Nancy, Dave had trailed Fred to his current meeting point, and he arrived just as another murder was unfolding.

Consequently, this incident sparks a conflict between the two gentlemen, culminating in Dave injuring Fred so severely that he falls into a nearby body of water. Given the circumstances, it seems probable that Fred is no longer alive.

Instead of revealing the truth, Dave seems to believe it, but instead, he informs Nancy that Fred has left for good, possibly assuming that Fred won’t be coming back anytime soon.

Apart from trying to persuade Nancy to depart Holland with him, he attempts to convince her as well. However, Nancy explains that such a move could complicate her son Harry’s life even more, which she is unwilling to risk. As a result, she decides to remain and assures him that they can continue keeping their hidden secret safe.

However, things aren’t as straightforward as they seem. It appears that Fred, contrary to expectations, did not die from his injuries sustained during their previous encounter. Intriguingly, he makes an appearance once more at the town’s yearly Tulip Time festival.

In time, Nancy encounters Fred conversing with Harry, and he attempts to persuade her that they ought to reconcile their marriage and put aside all past transgressions. He insists that the genuine him is the one who lived their shared family life, rather than the man responsible for the murders.

In a turn of events, Nancy becomes fed up. Despite starting their journey together, she eventually makes him halt the car. In a panic, she orders Harry to flee on foot. She retrieves a firearm, declaring that he won’t confine her in one of his “little houses.” Following this statement, she fires the gun at him.

In the heat of the opening scene, I found myself watching in horror as she merely grazed her husband with the first shot. However, the chaos that ensued saw her grasping a heavy clog and mercilessly striking him fatal blows. Overcome with remorse, she hastily tended to Harry, but alas, it was too late – his departure from this world seemed irreversible.

What does the closing voiceover mean: was Dave real?

Towards the end of the narration, Dave speaks softly, expressing: “I fervently wished that Holland, Michigan was the finest spot on our planet. On certain days, it seemed almost surreal – the locals, the blooming tulips, the windmills whirring.

At this moment, Nancy speaks up to express: “Everything was just right,” and subsequently, Dave resumes speaking, sharing: “Upon arrival, I felt fearful and puzzled.

Subsequently, the pair of voices start to intertwine, discussing the transformative impact their encounters had on their respective lives. They share stories of opening each other’s perspectives and finding a sense of safety and happiness in one another’s company.

At the very end, Nancy says: “I finally saw a way out. But sometimes I wonder, was it even real?”

The central idea in this context strongly resonates with the concept of deception: a significant portion of the movie delves into the fact that an immaculate, idyllic facade can conceal deep-seated, sinister truths, and parts of this concluding speech echo similar sentiments.

However, director Mimi Cave hinted that the character of Dave might merely be a creation born from Nancy’s mind – a stimulus or illusion essential for breaking through the barriers in her reality.

As a cinephile, I mused that perhaps Dave’s presence was merely an illusion, with Nancy creating this entire relationship in her imagination instead. It seems plausible now, and upon rewatching the movie, the pieces fall into place quite neatly.
