Exploring the world of Hollow Knight: Silksong will be the main focus of your journey. Because the map starts completely hidden and many areas are locked or difficult to reach, you’ll face a real challenge discovering everything it has to offer.
This guide focuses on how to unlock the map in *Hollow Knight: Silksong*, and mastering the most important movement abilities tied to Hornet’s Ancestral Arts.
Map, Quill, And Compass
The Map of Pharloom and a quill help you keep track of your adventures. As you explore and rest – whether on a bench or somewhere else – the map automatically fills in with the areas you’ve discovered.
You can get the Map from Shakra, an NPC first found where Grotto’s Bone Bottom and The Marrow meet. You’ll need to defeat the Bell Beast before Shakra appears, but if you can’t find them, there’s a way to summon them.
You’ll first buy the map for Grotto. After that, you can purchase maps for new areas whenever you find Shakra there.
To automatically update your maps while resting, you’ll also need to purchase the Quill separately.
Finally, you will need the Compass to accurately determine Hornet’s own position on the map.
Sprint or Swift Step
Sprint at blinding speed, beyond one’s natural limits.
Chase down prey and leap great distances.
To unlock more of Hornet’s abilities, you’ll first need to learn her first Ancestral Art. You can find the Swift Step Ancestral Art at the top center of the Deep Docks. This art lets Hornet sprint or dash while running or in the air, and also makes her jumps go further.
Glide or Drifter’s Cloak
Flare the cloak to ride strong winds or glide gracefully.
Start the “Flexile Spines” quest by talking to the Seamstress on her airship in the Far Fields. Once you’ve gathered the items she needs, bring them back to her to receive the Drifter’s Cloak Ancestral Art.
Wall Jump or Cling Grip
Cling to sheer surfaces and leap to rapidly scale heights.
You can find the Cling Grip Ancestral Art at the very top of Shellwood. To get to it, first defeat Sister Splinter. Then, head all the way to the left and loop around clockwise until you’re back on the right side. This will lead you to the top of the central platform in the main room.
Grappling Hook or Clawline
Throw your grappling hook with force, aiming directly at enemies. Using the hook consumes Silk, but damaging enemies restores it.
You can find the Clawline Ancestral Art deep within The Cauldron in The Underworks. Once you’ve gained entry to the area by speaking with Whiteward, turn left and follow the path around to the left.
Double Jump or Faydown Cloak
The cloak is filled with incredibly soft feathers. Use them to jump and glide, flying over your enemies. Gain altitude and attack from the air.
To do double jumps – essential for reaching hidden items and secrets – you’ll need the Faydown Cloak. You obtain the ability to create the Faydown Cloak by completing a challenging platforming sequence found on the right side of Mount Fay.
That is how to unlock the Map, and the various traversal Ancestral Arts in Hollow Knight: Silksong.
