Hollywood has tried multiple times to bring C.S. Lewis’s beloved Chronicles of Narnia books to the screen, but hasn’t fully captured their magic yet. The series, a classic fantasy published in the 1950s, is considered a timeless masterpiece with lasting appeal. Now, Netflix is planning a new Narnia film series, and has tapped director Greta Gerwig (known for Barbie) to lead the project.
While Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia film has the potential to be successful, it’s part of a pattern of unfinished adaptations of the books. Disney previously attempted a Narnia series, releasing three films from 2005 to 2010, but stopped after The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, leaving four books untouched. Sadly, every attempt to adapt the Narnia series so far has ended prematurely.
Movie Adaptations Of The Narnia Books Are Too Risky
Previous attempts to bring C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books to the screen have always been in a movie format. While there were earlier TV versions, they weren’t like the multi-season shows we see now. Instead, viewers got a 1967 series based on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, a full-length animated TV special also adapting that book, and a series of three-part episodes on the BBC covering the first four Narnia stories.
Beyond television, every Narnia movie has struggled with the same core problem: they haven’t been able to adapt the entire book series. Several things contributed to this. Early attempts were limited by low budgets and viewership ratings. More recently, Disney’s films faced delays in production, and the young actors aged out of their roles before all the stories could be filmed, making it impossible to continue the series.
Using a traditional television show format could be key to success. This approach is becoming increasingly popular for fantasy adaptations, as it allows for a more in-depth exploration of the story. For a series like Narnia, this would be particularly helpful, allowing the story to be adapted and improved in significant ways.
The story of The Magician’s Nephew could be woven throughout a Narnia TV series, using flashbacks to reveal Narnia’s history as the Pevensies’ adventures progress. With careful planning, a complete Narnia series could actually be successfully produced.
Greta Gerwig’s Narnia Movies Make A TV Adaptation Less Likely
Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia films are certainly interesting. The series will begin with The Magician’s Nephew, a potentially smart move to avoid problems previous adaptations faced. Still, long production schedules and the usual challenges of filmmaking mean there’s a real chance the project could stall before the final film, The Last Battle, is ever made.
If Netflix doesn’t adapt the entire Narnia book series, it’s unlikely we’ll get a TV show based on the books anytime soon. We’ve already seen several film adaptations of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and other stories, so another reboot feels tiring if Netflix’s attempt falls through. Fans hoping for a Narnia TV series might have to wait ten to twenty years before one appears.
