Holy Sh*t! 90s Hack ‘n’ Cast Classics Heretic and Hexen Launch on PS5, PS4 Today

The retro renaissance continues with Heretic + Hexen on PS5 and PS4 today.

Originally launched in 1994 by id Software, “Heretic” is now set to make its debut on PlayStation consoles for the very first time with this updated re-release.

The follow-up game, titled “Hexen: Beyond Heretic,” initially released in 1995; it was adapted for the PlayStation 1 around two years later, specifically in 1997.

The two games were created by Raven Software, a team that is most recognized today for their contributions to the development of Call of Duty series.

For those of you who know nothing about the originals, here’s how the press release describes them:

In 1994 and 1995, Raven Software developed and launched the games Heretic and Hexen using a modified version of the DOOM engine. These groundbreaking titles paved the way for first-person shooters by introducing innovative elements such as inventory systems, vertical aiming, and unique character classes. As a result, they significantly transformed the landscape of first-person action games for many years to come.

The unique appeal of this latest collection lies in its development by both id Software and Nightdive Studios, ensuring smooth, high-performance gameplay at 120fps in 4K on the PS5. Additionally, it supports intense 16-player deathmatches, mod customization, and a host of other features.

Moreover, not just one improvement, but you’ll find two additional episodes titled ‘Faith Renewed’ (Heretic) and ‘Vestiges of Grandeur’ (Hexen), included in the package as well!

As Senior Programmer Mike Rubits explained on the PS Blog:

As a gamer diving back into the world of Heretic and Hexen, I’m thrilled about the fresh content these two new episodes bring – ‘Faith Renewed’ is a brand-new chapter for Heretic, while ‘Vestiges of Grandeur’ is specifically crafted for Hexen. These episodes continue the trend we’ve seen in our recent re-releases, offering a completely revitalized experience that harnesses the original technology without being shackled to 30-year-old computers with limited memory resources.

Right now, you can grab the bundle at an incredibly low price of $14.99 – a deal that’s simply unbeatable given the wealth of content it provides! Furthermore, Limited Run Games is planning to release physical copies of this bundle too.
