This year marks the 35th anniversary of the beloved holiday comedy, but not all of the original cast will be celebrating in person. While stars like Macaulay Culkin and Catherine O’Hara are scheduled to attend screenings and answer fan questions, Daniel Stern, who played the clumsy burglar Marv alongside Joe Pesci’s Harry, will only be participating remotely.
The actor hasn’t been in a movie since 2019, but he’s been on Apple TV’s For All Mankind. He recently told PEOPLE he doesn’t plan to join his former Home Alone co-stars at any upcoming events because he rarely leaves his farm. He explained, “
I rarely leave my farm, and that’s not a criticism of the film at all. I’m happy to participate remotely – I can do phone or video calls – but I really prefer to stay home. It’s wonderful that people enjoy the movie, but when they tell me directly, it can be a bit much to handle sometimes.
Few predicted that Home Alone would become a beloved holiday tradition for decades to come, even though, as producer John Stern noted, he always felt it was a special film.
Beyond the excellent casting choices, the film’s success stemmed from a fantastic script written by John Hughes. Stern particularly admired Hughes’ ability to create a movie that was both hilarious and deeply moving, stating:
I honestly think Hughes wrote the funniest script I’ve ever come across. I was literally laughing so hard I was on the floor! But it wasn’t just silly; it was genuinely moving. The story of the kid and the neighbor rescuing him, and then him finally reuniting with his mother… it really got to me. It was such an emotional experience, and I loved it.
McCauley Culkin Has a Pitch for a New ‘Home Alone’ Sequel

20th Century Fox
After the huge success of Home Alone, several sequels followed, including the often-criticized but still popular Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and the poorly received reboot, Home, Sweet Home Alone. Recently, Macaulay Culkin hinted at a new movie idea that could bring his character, Kevin McCallister, back to the series after more than thirty years – excluding his recent appearances in commercials. He explained his thoughts, saying:
I’ve been toying with this movie idea for a while now. It centers around a guy – maybe a widower, maybe divorced – who’s a single dad, really throwing himself into work. He’s so focused on providing that he’s not really there for his kid, and it’s starting to cause some friction. There’s a moment, a turning point, where he literally gets locked out of his own home – a symbolic thing, of course. I’m not opposed to that plot point at all, but it would have to feel earned and authentic, you know? It needs to be just the right balance of heartwarming and heartbreaking.
It’s hard to imagine any movie ever reaching the same level of popularity as Home Alone, and maybe that’s why it’s best to leave it alone – we probably shouldn’t make any more, even if Macaulay Culkin were involved.
