Homestuck is finally getting an animated adaptation, created by many of the people who worked on Hazbin Hotel. The creative universe surrounding Hazbin Hotel, known as the Hellaverse, has been growing rapidly in recent years. The team at Spindlehorse has achieved significant success with both Hazbin Hotel and its spin-off series, Helluva Boss. Both shows began as popular pilot episodes released online, and it looks like the studio is preparing another major series with the release of their newest pilot.
Homestuck started as a webcomic created by Andrew Hussie in 2009 and continued for several years. The series became very popular, and now it’s back with a new animated pilot made by the team at Spindleroo. The pilot was shared on the official YouTube channel of Vivianne Medrano, the creator of Hazbin Hotel, and has already received over one million views in just a few days. You can watch it below to see how the series has transitioned to this new format.
Homestuck Makes Its Animated Debut With Brand-New Pilot
Homestuck is testing out a new pilot episode with the goal of getting it developed into a complete animated series, and it has a strong possibility of succeeding, especially considering the talented team working on it. Medrano’s Hellaverse series have consistently performed well since their initial pilot releases, and that success has continued with the full series launches in recent years. Because this project already benefits from a large and dedicated fanbase built from the original comics, it’s well-positioned for success regardless. The idea for this all originated with Homestuck’s original creator, Andrew Hussie.
I’ve been following the production of Hazbin Hotel, and it’s impressive to see the team behind it. Vivienne Medrano, the creator, is also an executive producer. Skye Henwood is directing and writing, with Mel Shin leading the storyboarding. Ben Jones is the Animation Director, and Hone is responsible for the art direction. Ash Beavers oversees the backgrounds, while Hilary Locke manages production. Tom Murray is a producer on the project, and Richard Horvitz is directing the voice actors. The music is being composed by Alexander Arntzen. As for the pilot’s voice cast, Toby “Radiation” Fox voices John Egbert, Cherami Leigh is Rose Lalonde, Colleen O’Shaughnessey plays Jade Harley, Adam McArthur is Dave Strider, and Brandon Winckler voices Karkat Vantas.
What’s Next for Homestuck?
This pilot has quickly gained over a million views on YouTube in just a few days, which means it has a good opportunity to attract an investor who could help expand the franchise. Although it isn’t officially part of the Hellaverse, its connection to that world should also help convince potential investors, especially those who have seen the success of shows like those launched with Prime Video.
Homestuck feels like a creation from a very different time on the internet. The original webcomic was incredibly long, with almost 10,000 entries, and it’s built up a dedicated fanbase who are still passionate about the series. The story starts with a group of kids unintentionally ending the world, but that’s just the first step in a much larger series of events. There’s a huge amount of content available, making it perfect for a full animated adaptation – hopefully, it will get one.
