For many years, Pixar movies were almost guaranteed to be successful at the box office, whether they were sequels or brand new stories. However, things have been more challenging for the studio since the 2020s. Partly because of the rise of Disney+ and the pandemic, Pixar’s recent films haven’t performed as well commercially. While Inside Out 2 was a huge hit, movies like Lightyear and Elio didn’t do well, and even Elemental, with $496.4 million worldwide, didn’t draw audiences like Pixar’s biggest successes used to. Now, everyone is watching to see how Hoppers, Pixar’s newest film, will perform this weekend.
Early numbers suggest the new Pixar film, Hoppers, will have a successful opening weekend. Deadline reports it’s expected to earn about $88 million worldwide, which would be Pixar’s best global opening for an original film since Coco in 2017. In the US, Hoppers is predicted to make $36-38 million, with another $45-50 million coming from international markets. While these numbers are promising, Pixar’s Onward earned a slightly higher $39.1 million domestically upon its release.
Can Hoppers Exceed Box Office Expectations?

Pixar films used to regularly open with over $90 million domestically – Inside Out did so in 2015. So, even acknowledging Pixar’s recent box office performance, the current projections of $36-38 million for Hoppers are surprisingly low. It’s important to remember these are just estimates, and Hoppers could still perform better than expected. There are reasons to believe it might actually have a strong opening weekend.
The new Pixar film, Hoppers, is already getting a lot of positive attention. After early excitement on social media, reviews have been overwhelmingly good, earning it a 97% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the same score as Coco. Critics love its upbeat energy, funny moments, and touching story, and many think it’s one of Pixar’s best films in years. While Elio (83% on Rotten Tomatoes) and Elemental (73%) also received good reviews, Hoppers is generating a much stronger buzz, suggesting it could be a big draw for moviegoers in theaters.
Pixar’s new film, Hoppers, looks likely to perform well in theaters, especially because it’s being released in early March – a time with fewer competing movies. This week also sees the release of The Bride!, a horror film directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, which is aimed at a different audience. The last major animated release was GOAT, which earned $74.6 million domestically but shouldn’t significantly impact Hoppers‘ success.
Pixar is hoping Hoppers does well in theaters. With Gatto already planned for next year, it shows Pixar still wants to create new, original stories. However, if original films don’t perform well at the box office while sequels continue to succeed, Disney might focus more on making sequels. Hoppers doesn’t need to be a massive blockbuster to ensure Pixar keeps making original films, but a profitable run would definitely be a positive for the studio.
