As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate worlds of both the Horizon series and various MMOs, I can’t help but feel a pang of déjà vu when it comes to Light of Motiram. The striking similarities to the Horizon series are hard to ignore, and as a gamer, I have seen this dance before – with Palworld and Pokémon.
Tencent Games together with Polaris Quest have unveiled their latest open-world game called Light of Motiram, and it’s stirred quite a debate among viewers. The title has sparked discussions on social media, as it seems to bear strong resemblances to the critically acclaimed Horizon series from Sony Interactive Entertainment and Guerrilla Games. However, no disciplinary action has been taken against the company yet, but it’s clear that this issue will be addressed in the upcoming weeks.
The game titled “Light of Motiram” is a multiplayer online game that operates across various platforms, where players can construct shelters, develop more than 100 customizable mechanical animals, and utilize them in combat against tough opponents. In terms of gameplay, it differs from the action-adventure series Horizon. Reminiscent of the Palworld controversy with The Pokémon Company, this game’s setting might stir up similar discussions about intellectual property.
The Epic Games page describes this game as follows: “In a world dominated by gigantic robots, traverse a massive open landscape, establish your stronghold, progress technology, raise Mechanimals, and confront challenging bosses. Starting from a primitive era, carve out a new path of advancement.” For those who haven’t played the Horizon series, the story takes place in a distant future where Earth is ruled by colossal machines, and humanity survives only within unique tribes. Some have noted that the title card shares a striking resemblance to the Horizon series, featuring a red-haired female character on the poster’s left side.
It seems Guerrilla Games might want to consult their legal team, as the resemblance between Light of Motiram and Horizon Zero Dawn/Horizon Forbidden West is quite striking. Nintendo took similar action against Palworld and it appeared effective. Just a thought.

In simpler terms, this user drew a parallel between the present scenario and the one found in Palworld versus Pokemon. After its launch, Palworld received criticism due to its resemblance to the Pokemon franchise. On September 19, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair for allegedly infringing on their patents. However, Pocketpair subsequently denied any knowledge of influence from the Pokemon franchise.
The Horizon Series Had Two Releases This Year
The series has been gaining momentum following the launches of “Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered” on PlayStation 5 and Windows, as well as “LEGO Horizon Adventures” for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Windows. The remastered edition enhanced the initial game by bringing its graphics up to par with the upcoming sequel in 2022, “Horizon Forbidden West”. However, both games received mixed reactions from fans and reviewers due to their less-than-stellar gameplay and lack of significant improvements.
Although the previous games didn’t live up to anticipation, fans are eagerly looking forward to the announcement of the third installment in the series. It was recently noticed that Guerrilla Games is seeking a Release QA Intern, which could suggest its upcoming online premiere. The untitled project is said to be an MMO set within the Horizon universe. With Light of Motiram being planned for release on PlayStation 5 and PC, the coming weeks are sure to bring some exciting developments if the rumors prove true.
