Sony recently revealed a new Horizon game called Horizon Steel Frontiers, which is an online multiplayer game coming to both mobile and PC. The announcement hasn’t been well-received by many fans.
Adding to the problems, the game developer NCSOFT has revealed that AI tools were used during the game’s creation, which has proven to be a controversial decision.
A recent article on the Korean website Ruliweb featured questions for the development team about several games in the works, including Horizon Steel Frontiers.
NCSOFT has confirmed they are using AI heavily while creating characters in their game.
Here’s the full answer, translated by ResetEra user Neha:
We’re currently testing how well simple AI characters can help players cooperate and fight alongside them. Because we’re making an action RPG, we’re focusing on finding the ideal number of players for a good experience, rather than trying to support a huge number of users. We’re also using AI tools internally to help with all parts of development, including coding and creating art.
We’re actively building these technologies into our projects, and we’ll share more details over time. The team developing Horizon is particularly enthusiastic about AI, and we’re using it heavily. You can expect to see a much bigger impact of AI in our games starting with those released after Aion 2.
NCSOFT explains that Horizon Steel Frontiers uses artificial intelligence to assist with many parts of the game’s creation, including both programming and artwork.
Generative AI tools have become a major topic of debate as they become more common and more powerful.
Embark Studio, the creators of the popular game ARC Raiders, is also facing criticism for how it uses artificial intelligence.
It’s likely we’ll see more of this in the future, as developers and publishers each figure out how to use the technology – or if they should use it at all.
The use of AI in Horizon Steel Frontiers is likely to upset some fans, especially those already disappointed the game isn’t initially releasing on PS5.
