NCSoft has confirmed that its new MMO, Horizon Steel Frontiers, was built using a lot of artificial intelligence tools. The company addressed rumors about AI-powered characters in the game, though didn’t specifically confirm or deny their existence. However, NCSoft did state that AI played a significant role throughout the game’s development, as reported by Korean website Ruliweb.
The company revealed that artificial intelligence played a role in creating their new games, Horizon Steel Frontiers and Aion 2, assisting with everything from coding to artwork. They also predict that AI will become increasingly common throughout the video game industry.
The company is currently testing and getting help with development through interactions with basic, non-player characters and combat scenarios. As an action RPG, they’re focusing on finding the ideal number of players rather than supporting a massive multiplayer experience, and they’re receiving support in many different areas. Internally, they’re also using AI throughout the production process, from writing code to creating art. AI is becoming increasingly common in the industry, and these technologies will likely become more widely known over time. The team working on Horizon Steel Frontiers is particularly enthusiastic about using AI, and they’re already using it extensively. Future games released after Aion 2 will feature even greater integration of AI technology.
NCSoft recently announced Horizon Steel Frontiers, a new game in development for PC, iOS, and Android. Set in the world of Guerrilla Games’ Horizon series – specifically the Deadlands – the game focuses on hunters teaming up to take down Machines. Players can expect familiar Horizon gameplay, including the ability to ride certain Machines as mounts while exploring the game world.
However, the new online game won’t simply copy the gameplay from Guerrilla’s games. While some elements, like the Pullcaster, will be adapted to work better in multiplayer combat, producer Sung-Gu Lee has confirmed that the game will also include entirely new features alongside familiar aspects.
Lee explained that they’ve introduced new and inventive ways to defeat the large machines in the game. For instance, players can now use a Pullcaster to quickly climb onto a damaged machine after breaking off a piece, then place traps on that spot to weaken it with various effects.
I’m really excited about the character customization in Horizon Steel Frontiers! The developers are letting us totally express ourselves, right down to the little things. They’re building a really detailed character creator where you can pick everything from your tribe and body type to your hairstyle and makeup – it sounds like we’ll be able to make a character that’s truly unique.
We don’t have a confirmed release date for the game yet. However, NCSoft has announced it won’t be launching on Steam or the Epic Games Store. Players will need to download it through NCSoft’s own launcher, called PURPLE.
