Horrifying New World War II Movie Becomes Instant Streaming Sensation As It Divides Audiences

I’ve been hearing so much buzz about this new German anti-war film, and it’s really making waves! Apparently, it’s dominating streaming charts, but it’s also sparking a lot of debate – people either seem to absolutely love it or really dislike it. It’s definitely got everyone talking.

The movie The Tank started streaming on Prime Video on January 2nd, following a limited release in theaters. It quickly became a hit, reaching the number one spot on Prime Video’s global top 10 movie chart by January 16, 2026.

As a critic, I’m not surprised to see The Tank absolutely crushing it at the European box office. It’s currently number one in a lot of places – Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, to name a few. And it’s doing incredibly well in its home countries, topping the charts in the Czech Republic and landing at a strong number two in Germany. This film is clearly a hit!

The intense World War II film from Amazon MGM Studios is performing well in the U.S., currently ranking at number three.

Known as Der Tiger outside of the country, the movie hasn’t been reviewed enough to earn a score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer. However, audiences seem to enjoy it, giving it a 62% rating based on over 100 reviews.

Viewers have pointed out that the new film, The Tank, shares similarities with Apocalypse Now, praising its exciting action and visual effects. However, some find the movie’s events hard to believe, and opinions are strongly divided about the ending – many viewers were let down by the final twist.

The movie The Tank is being promoted as a surreal experience, similar to Apocalypse Now. The story follows a five-man German Tiger tank crew sent on a covert mission deep behind enemy lines. As they rely on methamphetamine provided by the German army, their assignment spirals into a dark and disturbing journey.

Director Dennis Gansel drew inspiration for his film, The Tank, from stories his grandfather, a World War II soldier, shared with him. However, the movie doesn’t stick to strict realism, and some viewers are finding its more unusual elements hard to understand – a point Gansel admitted in a January 15, 2026 interview with The Telegraph.

Gansel admitted he anticipated some debate, but the reaction has been stronger than he thought. He’s now second-guessing some of his choices, especially given the negative response to how things ended.

The director acknowledged taking some creative freedoms with the film’s portrayal of the Tiger tank, explaining that, in reality, “A Tiger tank would never operate on its own, and it wouldn’t be used for a rescue mission.”
