Okay, so good news for fans of Westeros! While we’re still waiting for Season 3 of House of the Dragon, HBO is starting to give us a peek at what’s coming. Things were quiet for a bit after that first trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but now the updates are picking up. HBO has announced they plan to release at least one Game of Thrones show every year until 2028 – that includes a second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 2027 and a fourth season of House of the Dragon in 2028. But here’s what I’m really excited about: we’re getting some hints about Season 3! Just a heads-up though, if you’ve read Fire & Blood – the book House of the Dragon is based on – this is where things might get spoilery.
Along with the announcement that both shows have been renewed, HBO has shared the first glimpses of House of the Dragon Season 3. The photos feature Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) amidst a battle with Tully soldiers, and Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) pictured with her crown.

The changes they’re making to Daemon’s storyline are notable, as he doesn’t play a large role in the battles at this point in the book. However, the glimpse of Rhaenyra is even more intriguing. Based on the window and the building’s design, she appears to be inside the Red Keep in King’s Landing—possibly even in the queen’s chambers within Maegor’s Holdfast. The accompanying text and her expression strongly hint at what’s about to happen.
What This Means For Rhaenyra In House Of The Dragon Season 3

Rhaenyra’s success in taking King’s Landing was foreshadowed by the end of House of the Dragon Season 2. Alicent Hightower had promised to open the city gates to Rhaenyra if she could ensure the safety of Helaena and Daeron Targaryen. However, this agreement hinged on Rhaenyra killing King Aegon II Targaryen, though unbeknownst to either side, Larys Strong had already secretly moved Aegon out of the city.
This creates a significant complication in the agreement, meaning there are likely more surprises ahead – it’s already diverging from the source material by omitting the deal between Rhaenyra and Alicent. However, it’s still noteworthy to seemingly confirm Rhaenyra’s return to King’s Landing and her complete authority there.
Rhaenyra’s expression is key: she appears deeply saddened, almost defeated, despite having just conquered King’s Landing – a moment that should be celebratory. This likely stems from the death of her oldest son, Jacaerys Velaryon, who died in a large naval battle, similar to what was foreshadowed at the end of Season 2 in the book. Paired with the caption, “For the crown, at any cost,” it’s clear she’s realizing the heavy price she’s paid to claim the Iron Throne, and that even more sacrifices may lie ahead.
The latest image hints at a more troubled path for Rhaenyra. While Season 2 already showed signs of her developing a sense of superiority and almost believing she was destined for greatness – particularly with the introduction of the dragonseeds – her all-black outfit makes this transformation even clearer. The outfit is reminiscent of Daemon’s, and even brings to mind characters like Anakin Skywalker. The source material does depict Rhaenyra becoming more ruthless, based on historical interpretations. It’s unclear how far the show will take this, as it’s generally portrayed her more favorably. However, even a single image reveals a lot about what to expect for Rhaenyra in Season 3 of House of the Dragon.
I’m so excited for more House of the Dragon! We’re going to have to wait a bit, though – Season 3 isn’t coming until summer 2026. Good news is, you can rewatch the amazing first two seasons anytime on HBO Max right now.
